Selling data to the highest bidder doesn't surprise me. Users should expect this, but since it's all buried in TOS, only more savvy users are going to know or notice. Maybe it's time for some ethical standards among developer

I wanted to be a novelist. I still do. But I spent a lot of time on goals that weren't related to this. I wish I had put this goal higher on the list.

If that's the case, then say it. We don't believe in diverse work environments. We don't care if every employee is a white male. They asked for diversity, this is how you get it. Not trying to be sarcastic, but your argument

I'm reluctant to use new Google services because I'm afraid they will be abandoned (Buzz, Wave, Reader) or pivot into a new direction different than what I originally signed on for (Picasa). But I think social networks have a life

Not a one thing, but I would suggest reading, or at least skimming, The Ten Day MBA. Really good overview of everything that goes into running a business. It's dated, but mostly just in the case studies.

Privatization only works if multiple companies are competing for customers. Privatization of prisons, for example, results in increased spending because the "customer" in this case is elected representatives.

A great organizer makes all the difference. Meetups were more interesting to me when there was less great content on the web. Now you can find tutorials on everything, so meetups are networking and not much else.

It's not a problem limited to our society. Ethics, regulations, and consumer pressure can all help to keep corporations in check. The thing to remember is that a corporation can never have a moral compass, so we have to give it to them

Uber drivers don't get to accept or reject rides based on destination or cost. All they know is the pickup location of the passenger. You really have to go through a lot of contortions to defend Uber on this one. Remember when Best Buy

I love this, but I would instantly want to access the info from mobile. I'm a heavy Evernote user. About once a year I look for a replacement and consider rolling my own low tech CLI interface. Then I remember all the notes I take on m

Spring break has made things easier. Monday will be interesting. I don't think the bridge collapse will have any lasting effect on the city, though. (Other than the DOT will stop storing flammable material under the Interstate)

I live in town and feel the same way. Some trips just aren't worth it. It would be easier for me to go to Chattanooga than Perimeter Mall. Most areas of Midtown are really easy though, so no change there.

Not my favorite, but an underrated one: The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster. Forster is better known for writing period romances like A Room with a View. The Machine Stops, written in 1909, deals with issues of isolation and alienation that

Sorry if that was unclear. I do value retirement savings and understand the advantage of a pre-tax retirement contribution. What I mean to say is that salaryX + 3% 401k match is not as valuable as salaryX + 50% salaryX with no 401k match. T

I agree that a 401k match is better than the equivalent salary. Match is often a company policy and non-negotiable. Salary is negotiated per individual and usually more than once over the lifetime of a job, so it's easier to get more s
