I'm not the person you originally replied to, but just to give a bit of perspective as an EM myself: I think this depends a lot on the person and the team. One part of the gig is just being an effective project manager, and those skill

I guess I’d describe SJ as a kind of monoculture. Everyone I knew was a fellow tech person, and escaping the programmer scene was impossible. When I lived in Revere Beach, my neighbours were chemists, doctors, geologists, professors… a brai

Both Miami and Fort Lauderdale themselves are fairly walkable downtown. But the metro area is LA style car-first. I shipped my car from CA, but I only drive it when I want to leave Fort Lauderdale, basically. Paying $2300/mo for a 1600

I'm a recent arrival in Fort Lauderdale, from San Jose (though I spent several years in Boston as well). The vibe is uniquely its own down here. The biggest difference is that tech feels like a minority in South Florida. That is, unlik

Indeed, this looks like a poor quality scan on an old monochrome Xerox machine or the like, not an actual attempt at redacting content. It's readable in Preview on macOS at the right zoom level.

It's possible if Apple-the-organisation is contributing/driving back to some project, under the corporate entity. See WebKit for example. However an individual employee could not just decide they want to submit some patches to Apa

That's a correct summary. This is the reason why people who join Apple suddenly abandon their OSS projects. It's worth noting there was a huge debate internally about this around the time I left, with many people dissatisfied with

A bit late with this reply, but the answer is: Make patches internally, to work around the problematic areas. Often done to avoid the legal necessity to contribute it back upstream. For example, hook code at runtime to jump out to Apple spe

In some sense, it doesn't surprise me that there's some market for this. For the older audiophile who doesn't understand digital music or networking, their only analog is.. analog. :-) So if you look at the setup with "v

This is interesting from the external perspective, but let me provide the internal one: Employees are prohibited from so much as _thinking_ open source for anything not directly managed or maintained by Apple. Swift is one thing, but suppos

From what I've gathered, the attribution was introduced retroactively, recently, by rebasing the repo with that and on top of the upstream commits, only after the discussion was picked up publicly.

Hearing from friends in low-level management on the inside that upper management is well aware of the impending attrition, and are willing to (and expect to) eat some low amount of turnover. Will be interesting to see how far off reality is

I suspect that's entirely the point. By not giving people 2 consecutive days, it requires you to still remain close to the campus and prevents you from doing anything interesting like travel for half the week.

Anecdotally, I worked at Apple, as a software engineer, and I've never heard of this, or anything like it. I would characterize the actual attitude more as - we have to say no to a lot of good ideas, so that we can go 110% on the grea

iMacs have always had upgradeable RAM, just about the only user-serviceable part in them. There's a little door you can open on the back by the power connector. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201191

I'd definitely encourage everyone to git GL a try - our teams switched over from GH + Jira about a year ago, and haven't looked back. The integrated CI and project management features are a game changer.

Streaming content selection is garbage, except for their original programming, and getting Blu-Rays by mail, which are easily ripped, is less risky and higher quality than piracy. Not hard to see the appeal.

The grammar mistake in the supposed official document - "Keep doing what your (sic) doing" - is very unlike Apple. Raises a red flag on authenticity in my mind.

I've found it similarly ineffective. I have my packages addressed to "_sparky, Leave at Back Door, 123 My Street". Maybe 5% of them end up there.

I think there is some aversion to building a product that is too motorcycle-like; regulators may start to get ideas if the scooters look too much like a Vespa.
