Oh man, .NET needed this. Did some PDF work for a .NET project last year and found the ecosystem to be somewhat light on PDF support. There's a few commercial options, but they're pricey.

System76 offers woodgrain sides in multiple colors on their Thelio desktop line [0]. I've been running one for six months as my employer-provided machine and it's been fantastic. [0] https://system76.com/desktops

I also have fond memories of the G4 case for this reason - it was a breath of fresh air after so many years of dealing with cumbersome Whiteboxen.

Calling those two machines the same would be like calling a Curtiss JN-4 and a Messerschmitt ME 232 "the same." Sure, they both fly and use fixed wings to attain lift, but that's where the similarities end. That's some s

My printer memories of the late 90's were of cheap Canon bubblejet printers. The ones that were cheaper to buy than replacement ink cartridges, to the point that it was cheaper to buy a new printer than it was to replace the ink. Good

I strongly remember using Firebug in Firefox (mind-blowing tools, for the time) in ~2008 and having to debug issues in IE, which had the equivalent of a Check Engine Light for debugging.

There's a subplot in The Newsroom where a producer edits an interviewee out of context, leading to the network broadcasting false accusations of serious war crimes. The producer wasn't careful enough, and a clock visible in the ba

Thanks for posting that, I really enjoyed watching it. I had a Treo 650 in the 2000s and loved it, despite its flaws.

How much of that time and money was R&D and prototyping, and how much of that was the bespoke production of this single unit?

My wife bought me a $300 coffee grinder for Christmas. As a coffee ...enthusiast?... I'm quite fond of it. Perfectly consistent grid, very quiet electric operation, small footprint. I could argue that $300 was too much for it, but I&#x

My best friend spent the '90s running a BBS with two modems on an OS/2 machine, running two instances of the BBS package (Wildcat?) via MSDOS emulation. Good times.

Fully agree. The best HN posts are the ones where a few experts in an esoteric field can totally geek out about their art. I may not understand half of what they say but it's always fully interesting.

About 15 years ago my boss got promoted from VP of Engineering to CEO. It was a weird move for him, and one of the ways he handled it was to move out of his private office and onto a desk right in the middle of the R&D lab floor. He did
