Every day, thousands of people use a given app for the first time. We don't bombard them with pop-ups for every single feature. Yet they manage to become proficient. There's this wonderful expression that people don't buy a h

A sysadmin at one of my startups once mixed up c and x in a tar backup. Our source repository suddenly teleported back in time. We polled ourselves to see who'd updated most recently, and that guy's snapshot became commit #1 in th

I disagree that Google sets a good example with their "clings" that pop up and point out UI changes. (That's what they're called internally.) Clings are annoying and disruptive, and nearly all of them alert the user to a

People in Japan reliably observe societal norms. If a capsule hotel floor is for sleeping and getting dressed, then the only noises you'll hear are people sleeping and getting dressed. Think of the door as a "quiet please" si

Capsule hotels in Japan are very similar, but they rent nightly as other hotels do. The capsules typically have a shade that acts as a non-locking door, which means there is privacy but not sound isolation. Each floor has keys, so not just

No mention of Bitwig, which just keeps adding new features and modularity. Bitwig is mentioned three times in the article. That said, I don't think the article author would consider Bitwig to be substantially novel compared to the ot

Maybe I'm paranoid about distractions, but my method is to ask one of my kids to walk in a circle around my car while it's parked in the driveway. I'll adjust my mirrors so that the kid is continuously visible, either directl

The point is design vs execution. Tesla's goal isn't to put critical controls and displays in an inconvenient or unsafe location; it's to make fewer controls and displays critical, so that drivers can focus on driving. It
