Ok, I apologize if it sounded like political change was the starting point. (Good! I obviously need to clarify!) Political change is definitely the result -- but media outlets frequently claim it is all four: cause, method, effect, and defi

Because violating copyright is not the same as stealing (at all), or stealing a car (which the copyright industry loves to say it is), or detonating explosives in a mosque (which this article conflates it with). Radical terrorism is an enor

Well, you did comment on an article where many corporations view free software as a stepping stone to "attaching strings." Why can't the corporations negotiate separate licensing deals? Why do the corporations keep building t

You're suggesting we fake a signal? Technically, a satellite could be parked in a Lagrange Point. But the signal would have to be very, very convincing because there will be many, many very smart people looking at it.

I'd love it if you documented some of the following: • 'Our goal is to solve more of our customers problems everyday. So that they can do things that add value in the world.' • (Separately) How Microsoft is on the right track

I don't think he wished anything away, I think his point is that it reduces the value for all of us. Maybe take it as an appeal to logic: if nations are to grapple with the issues raised by the NSA and her sister orgs in the five eye c

It is different, right now. No source code for Swift. It's really simple: quit claiming to be open source, or actually ship the code.

I have to agree. It used to be Apple who was claiming Unix's traditions. Now they use promises of a future release as PR pieces to combat existing software. (This was a Microsoft strategy several decades ago.)

With the recent rise of indie games and the platforms to distribute them, has the swing back toward solo devs actually changed the industry? Or will the AAA games just continue their graphics treadmill?

Ok, poor question on my part, but a great answer. Thanks! Yes, wavelength-division multiplexing can expand the capacity of a single strand. I meant, packet switching. Switching packets of photons would be done by transitioning from transpar

I assume RMS would say that Java is non-free, and that the best move here would be to create a free compiler and runtime -- i.e. a new language. This stands to reason, as one of the first things RMS did in his efforts to advance Free Softwa

Phone surveillance doesn't have to be un-blocked in this bill. It can be quietly un-blocked as a rider/addendum to some "must-pass" bill right before a long break -- de rigueur for the Senate.

It looks like from the comments on your gist, there are ways to do it. Whether it's expressive enough is subjective but it's worth pointing out that there _are_ solutions.

In KSP, I would compare it to landing on Gilly (Eve's moon) with a solid rocket booster. Gilly is the smallest body in the program, so its gravity is so weak you can leave orbit with your space suit's thrusters.
