I live in Sunset Park, Brooklyn next to the D train (20-30 mins to Manhattan) and I've made $80-95k and live quite comfortably, so if I make it over six figures I'll be more than fine. It's fairly cheap in terms of rent and g

I like the way you think. Unfortunately programmers like to either be really against something or treat it as dogma and the only way to do things.

Eh, not hard to paint your walls the colors you like and I see plenty of crazy furniture colors at IKEA. The "white blank walls and wood floor" is a choice people make and like—there are plenty of colorful houses.

Engineering might be the former. Programming and software "engineering" is definitely the latter.

A little off-topic but in 2011 I had an Asus Eee PC with a super slow processor and like 2GB of RAM (later 4). While the tiny screen sucked, I used to chat on Facebook, watch YouTube, post on Tumblr, etc with no problem. Now plenty of websi

...but so many smaller companies and startups use React. Personally all of my employments (five at this point) have used it and none had more than twenty programmers. Has it actually been an issue in real life?

I know plenty of intelligent and accomplished programmers who use and like JavaScript. I like poking fun at it every now and then, but come on.

So many big companies with tons of lawyers use React... surely if they do it it's fine.

I don't know much about Queens, but I mentioned Sunset Park because it's a working class, immigrant neighborhood. If LIC's demographics are similar to say, Brooklyn Heights, then I expect paranoid behavior from parents.

In the US it's the exact opposite. Saying you're not religious is political suicide!

Many people in this thread lamenting overworking in their youth. Maybe I've been lucky but at 22 I'm very happy with my decent 9-5 type employments. I've never felt the ambition necessary to sacrifice my free time for work—I&

The media didn't help, starting (maybe before) with the film Kids then continuing on to news about school shootings and "catch a predator" shows.

FWIW this doesn't happen in more urban neighborhoods as much. I live in Brooklyn and there are (well, "were" since summer ended) kids of all school ages roaming around and playing in the park with little to no supervision.

If there was ever an uBlock for the brain, the first thing I'd block would be programming blog posts. Sure, I'll miss a ton of good ones (which I can whitelist!), but they're really not worth the investment.

I think what frustrates me is that I see these people as, for lack of a better word, "posers". I'm no functional expert and I'm just in the beginning of my career, but I'm very skeptical of devs who had little probl

Heh, you describe me exactly. I'm "junior"-ish and the second to last place I worked at was microservice, a ton of Docker, and MongoDB. Definitely wished we had a simple monolith with Postgres instead.

The "intermediate beginner" who latches on whatever is "new" and trendy is my biggest annoyance with the industry. Unfortunately functional programming seems to be what at lot of these people are claiming is the solution

I agree. If you go a few hundred beyond downtown/Museum District/Heights/Montrose area, it's impossible to live without a car (even in those areas it's not that easy). I know it's not fair because it's tec

I'm from Houston and lived there until moving to NY for college... it's one thing to "get used" to the heat, it's another to be able to walk a decent distance every single day in it. Even here in NY some summer days

I don't worry about money now because I save and budget appropriately. I meant that with 200k I wouldn't have to think much about money at all. Sorry for the confusion!

Depends where you live in NY. I make 80k in Sunset Park and I live comfortably. 200k would mean I don't have to worry about money much. That said, no kids.

I wish the classical music recommendations were better. Spotify, like most people in general, lump all "classical" music together. If I listen to Mozart or Haydn, I get Romanticism and later types of music as recommendations. I al

Yep. In a lot of parts of the industry, old and stable is seen as a negative by many. Maybe that's why people don't consider programming "engineering".
