There's a stigma against community college in the US for high-achieving students. At least where I went to high school, it was where the kids who did okay/poorly in high school went to get a second chance in hopes of transferring

If I was studying web development in 2016 with the hops of getting a good job, I'd also stay away form Perl and learn JavaScript.

Interesting! More interesting is that apparently the TS compiler itself uses no classes. I just think jeremiep is conflating static typing with Java-style OOP and "design patterns".

It's interesting that TypeScript often gets lumped into "OOP" when a few functional projects like RxJS and Cycle use it. Are their codebases also OOP?

I think people like not having the usual Babel plugin/config + setup soup. There's value in all-in-one solutions with clear limitations. For example, TS doesn't implement JavaScript stuff below stage 2 while many devs liberal

If you're in the US and want to be extremely pedantic/annoying, then no. ABET (the engineering accreditation society in the US), doesn't have "Software Engineering" as a valid discipline.

I've found that a lot of people here in HN and Reddit are really passionate about not being tracked, so even if it was as easy as one command, the fact that Homebrew did it at all is enough to make some people not want to use it. Nothi

Assuming things about people from internet comments is usually rude, but I agree. From my experience a lot of the people that don't "get the point" of TypeScript or Flow haven't worked in largue applications that needed

What that person means is that Elixir is a "practical" functional programming language. Of course, that's because Erlang is too. Note that "practical" functional programming is something I just made up, but in gener

Happy to report that I'm one of those people! I like how Elixir keeps itself very practical, but at the same time lets you extend it however you want if you feel something is missing in your project. For example, you'll never find

Less HTML to load? Probably makes no difference in most cases, but it is less to load. Many React/Webpack flows do something like this (minify or use a barebones template HTML).

I second Elixir, though if trends continue you're going to get a bunch of long time Ruby/Rails people (not bad or good, but something to be aware of).

It all depends where you live and what is considered front end or web developer. In NYC if frontends get paid less it's only $10k less at most. They're still making up to six figures with less than ten years of experience.

I second something like `nvm`. Even homebrew takes a long time to update their Node versions. That said, I use `n` because for some reason `nvm` makes my shell take more than a second to startup (I've tried tons of fixes and none work)

Nope. Like I said, I was actually successful with Angel List—you just have to have a good profile and either write good introductions or contact the company directly. It could just use a cleanup and moderation.
