There's an interesting dichotomy on the "women in tech" question between "SV tech" and non-SV tech. I briefly worked at a tech company making oil industry software in .NET in a Houston suburb. Not trendy, cubicles,

My view has always been that after a day of work or school, the last thing most people want to do is engage in a deep discussion. Instead they want to scroll down funny content (I do this myself or just play video games, just in case I soun

I think the point of the slides (and college in general) is that you don't necessarily have to stress out yourself to be an all As student with a double major to get a good job. Instead, relax a bit more and build software.

We put a lot of emphasis on grades in high school. Makes sense - that's what colleges want. But in college, as the slides show, there are so many non-strictly-academic opportunities that a lot people miss out on because in their mind t

This slideshow points at some key problems high achieving people face post-high school - how to stand out when everyone's as smart/hard working as you when all you know is getting good grades? I knew a lot of people who double maj

IDK about DHH but Jason Fried, also a writer in this blog (and co-founder, I think) makes similar points about growth, startups, etc. I do agree with them that the "we must be the biggest!!!" attitude of SV/NYC startups is ha

I like this argument a lot more than "I want more money". In my experience, programmers sadly do let their superiors walk all over them with regards to salary and work hours.

This is what I feel when I see people complain that developer salaries have an upper limit in the mid 100s. I mean, I kinda get it, but honestly $100k is more than enough for me, let alone $150k.

People like him may be bored of using money as a means to get girls (no need to resort to prostitution for this even). Instead, they probably get off from methods like these.

Honestly it depends on you and your group. My group doesn't care for Netflix or podcasts, but we watch a lot of YouTube channels revolving around video games. As others have said, YouTube is huge with people around ten years younger th

Never liked the idea of karma myself - most people _do_ care about it (particularly in HN or reddit where low karma posts are hidden) so they will either not speak their mind or parrot some popular opinion to reap rewards. Combine that with

OK, ready to get out of my bubble. How true is this? The only people I know that work more than 40 hours a week still work less than 60. This is in "office", food, and service jobs.

I'm no entrepreneur, but I really don't think sites like Tumblr or Reddit (or 4chan) should be VC $$ backed startups or bought for a billion dollars. I've never seen them be able to monetize past maybe their server costs.

OK, gonna put my internet nerd hat on. That frog has been around 2008, when a 4chan user uploaded part of a 2005 comic by Matt Furie[1]. Then it was photoshopped around to its various moods and forms and a couple of years ago hit the mainst

A lot of our industry hires based on buzzwords. For web developers, it pays to have React experience in their resume. Doesn't matter if the app they built didn't need it at all.
