From my work teaching I am very skeptical of the notion that it is a family's ability to "afford" books that makes the difference. It is whether the family knows that books are important and chooses to get them and read with their children.

I take your point completely, but a thousand a year sounds low. Was some of your cost covered by loans?

I feel like data helps you reach the peak of local maxima. And perhaps that lines up with absolute maxima for mature industries. But I expect people still need to be involved to get us in range of the target.

I am a programmer. Every day I am happy and, frankly, a little mystified to find that I get to make a great living doing something I love. But that's why I originally pursued it: because I loved it. Not because I was chasing a paycheck. I a

How do we know video games aren't partly to blame? To me it seems unlikely they are to blame, but I have no proof. I don't play or create games so I don't have any direct stake in this discussion. Most arguments I hear from gamers use pla

Are we dealing with an uncanny valley situation here? At hfr and high res, are films just short of being good enough in such a way that they are freaky? Will another decade push it over the edge into real-realism and then it comes into it's

We fake our designer using Git. He has access to each repo's view and static asset files through a Samba share. Every afternoon we ssh in and commit his changes. When he says stuff is in good shape for the next release we merge his branch t

Someone close to me works at a very good public high school in Massachusetts. The district is in the middle of the enormous task of planning/budgeting/funding a new school building. At one point they showed some preliminary plans to various

I very much agree that there is a balance to be struck, and messages designed for people to read should be composed with that fleshy audience in mind. However, if a polite message goes unread, the effort was in vain. And getting computer

My philosophy on this is that there is a very high value on being brief. Even one less word can make the difference between a message seeming to long too bother with and actually getting read.

I have two out of the air guesses on how brain damage might cause crime. First, part of your brain responsible for empathy might not work right. Second, if you're dumb you have a harder time holding down a job, so might be more likely to re

I can't speak to the position of the OP, however, I have a general point I don't think I've seen mentioned. For some individuals, a college degree may not serve much value, either financially or for it's own sake. However I feel that collec

Even McNulty on The Wire? When I saw him later on some talk show and he was speaking and holding himself as a posh Brit (ie himself) it almost broke my brain. So, yeah, he fooled me.

If we want people to migrate to version 3, wouldn't we want 2-to-3 tooling so people could migrate their old work? I assume I am misunderstanding the purpose or the meaning.

I don't know about this stuff, so ask in earnest: couldn't such smaller projects upload their compiled installers to some free app hosting service, and link to that from their github site pages?
