I completely agree with your sentiment. Could it be that in the UK, there is more ingrained sense of collective duty? Or that the prestige of working for the BBC is such that it attracts higher than average talent and work ethic?

I have heard this theory before, and I understand it is made by reputable sources. But it's always baffled me. I would have thought even a freshman geology major could tell the difference between a man-made stone and one cut out of nat

Right. When people are so engulfed in what they are creating they forget how much of it other people don't know. My own personal rule is "start by stating the obvious", and then refine as appropriate.

Have they had some grad student just go and camp in an area like this for a full year? I would think that would help you get some insights and plausible hypothesis. It seems the rocks-sliding-across-the-desert mystery could have been solved

That seems sensible, but in my experience with RC planes, flying low can actually make avoiding crashes very difficult.

I have not read the circle-square theorem, but surely you are leaving something out. With a large n, many points will fall inside the circle, and four times that quantity can not logically get closer and closer to 3.14

In Fitzgerald's The Beautiful and the Damned , the protagonist's father is fond, in later years, of attributing his business success to his lifelong religious devotion. The hero doubts it. I have been temped in the past to equate

Even if you could determine the initial state, wouldn't quantum effects, aggregating over time, make it non-deterministic?

What would the best strategy be to lose money in the stock market? If we ignore fees, would it be any easier to time market purchases to optimize for loss than it would be to optimize for gain? And I don't mean picking dates after th

I'm missing something here. Why would barges be a good place to host events? Why not one of the many traditional land based locations that are always used? Is there something particular about being on the water? Or is it just being fun

Is there going to be a big freeing up of lots of obvious patents in the late twenty-teens? I feel like a lot of this started in the late 90's, and I believe they only last twenty years. So will a lot of this just go away soon?

To survive a hazard (as you, and to some extent I, did) is best of all. To suffer the constraints of protective encumbrances is next best. To die of the hazard as a child is worst. There is a balance to be met, sure. But in choosing safetel

I wonder if the devastating effect on us may be a sort of coincidence. It's chemical code running on a different (but similar) biological chip-set than evolved for, and just happens to unleash hell on our human hardware.
