Intellectual monopolies disincentivize development and incentivize rent seeking. Here, rent seeking is legal action and lobbying intended to protect and extend monopolies, instead of advancing science. Other than economic logic, we have nat

I could be wrong but in these cases (or when people criticize voices, similarly), people are more put off by expressions than raw features. Nonverbal communication is high emotional bandwidth. I don’t begrudge someone disliking someone else

There's good evidence to think complex cognitive tasks (like strategizing, coding...) suffer with CO2 > 1000 ppm https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S036013232...

This type-to-search-immediately functionality is why I still have Launchbar installed on all my Macs -- there's nothing faster for navigation/moving/operations, even in the terminal.

Yes! I absolutely loved Egan's idea of the Jewel, and of course it turns out Dennett predates him by about a decade.

Loved this story. Surprised to find how simple and straightforward his writing is here, when in discussions on free will he was much more obfuscatory. Is it due to the difference in difficulty between posing interesting questions and giving

Last I checked we are not post scarcity, so we still are those thirsty survivors vying over limited resources. There is only a clear "right" answer provided we first agree on ethics. Whether you propose an industry subsidy, or cam

This framing is a false dilemma. All resource allocation decisions are also ethical choices.

It's interesting they talk more about visual embellishments (aged paper, vintage looking finish) than acoustic properties. What is it about Stradivari or other hand made instruments that make them so coveted, are desirable sonic charac

The problem with "take it or leave it, it's just a story" is that stories are not neutral, or cost-free. Memes compete for attention/proliferation/survival, and false-but-appealing memes outcompete true-but-boring m

The basis is self evident: he is an affiliate marketer for an overpriced product with astronomical margins (investors piled in at north of a billion) making health claims without scientific basis, 3rd party testing, or transparent labeling.

The host is a supplement shill as well. It’s a “discussion” between a snake oil salesman and an algorithmic megaphone.

Why wouldn’t it? Weight is a lagging indicator, and it’s only one phenotype out of the countless ways your body is affected by what you eat.

I prefer the peasant version: Don't be so precious about finely chopping, straining, and pureeing. Just throw your delicious ingredients together and eat all of the resulting stew/broth/chili/shabu shabu.

Yeah, it takes effort but improving quality of produce is a matter of improving the inputs, like soil ecology. Anyone can do it, if they care enough. Governments should just stop subsidizing megafarms that happen to not care.

Isn't this a false dichotomy? The inverse -- high spending and low savings -- still leads to reinvestment. From business POV whether they get funds via loans or via revenue the money they have to invest in growth is the same.
