TLDR: No, it is not. Once again Betteridge's law of headlines holds.

This might sound a bit like a buzz-kill, but I don't think fusion power is necessarily competitively cheap. I think it will be comparable to nuclear power with a ~ 10 times higher capital investment to build a fusion-plant. Already now

Its entirely unknown who succeeded or not since both sides have agreed not to disclose the deal. I think its likely that Youtube just got it their way but the non-disclosure is part of the deal so GEMA can still present it as a victory, and

As a student ~ 7 years ago i had a summer job at an Audi assembly line. At the first place I worked there you had roughly one person every 10 or 15 meters or so appart, mainly restacking the supplies for welding robots. So there was really

I think the video capabilities especially in connection with the CSI camera is what sets the Raspberry Pi really apart from Odroid and so on. It's pretty amazing that it can encode 720p video at 48fps - didn't something like encod

Slightly off-topic: a lot of Vanguard's ETFs are synthetic. Is there anyone who can say something about the risk involved in this in contrast to non-synthetic ETFs? Edit: As it turns out most or all of Vanguard's ETFs are physical

I'm doing a PhD in physics using using large scale numerical codes. From what I can see more computer-science would mainly improve the maintainability rather than the speed of codes used. They are often already heavily optimized and, f

The IR source is easy, but how whould they have done the imaging? All IR sensors I know are semiconductor based, clearly not a option at this time.

One intrinsic drawback in the concept of overlay journals is however that is does not allow for double-blind reviews. Until this is widely implemented I think the publishing process won't be fair.

I would be interested in seeing some real-world figures for HPC applications (e.g. VASP). I think most people use Intel MKL these days. A 30% performance increase over MKL as in the first figure would be huge.

To make it even faster, there is a (non-free) numpy version compiled with the Intel MKL math library [1]. We use this library in high-performance-computing, it's as fast as you can get on intel hardware. [1] https://store.co

I use Matplotlib for my publications written in latex. Matplotlib can also render via a latex backend, which gives you then matching fonts and symbols in the text and figure by using something as simple as: rc('text', usetex=True)
