I was half your age in 89, so don't remember the news item, but I have strong memories of the Netscape and ozemal icons taking up estate on my step mum's compaq in the mid 90s. She was writing her PhD on it, and technically we wer

Tried to get pouchdb / rxdb working on a number of projects over the years. Hoodie also. Ran into "too hard" problems every time and fell back to something else :/ I think what I liked the least was the complexity introd

In Australia 35mm cameras worked out to about this (for decent c41 developed at a decent print shop), even before smartphones / digis went mainstream.

I mean, all the attestation here does is say this photo came from this person / camera. Like a hardware-backed NFT. The trust ultimately lies with the photographer and, by extension, the org they're working for at the time. I'

Is there any contiguous system available that doesn't have issues at edges? Sure lnglats are tedious, especially crossing the 180th, but at least you know that -180=180 and -179~=179. Memorability useful but not necessary?

I use a slightly customised version of tree style tabs to great effect. Actually uses the horizontal bar to show pinned / recent tabs (which time out and hide) and an overlaid / toggle-hidden sidebar for the full list of group-org

I've a similar local / S3 (compat) strategy but use Kopia. I currently only backup remotely to B2 (risk taker!), but could easily and cheaply add redundancy in here .. e.g S3 / R2 / random hosting. It's very cheap ~

Thanks for the thoughtful advice. Agree on it being tool, same as LLMs. I guess my point, beyond the practical, was that there are some aspects to the tool-less experience that are hard to replace. I'm thinking patience and, I guess, t

Reading the comments here made me think of a dishwashing analogy. I grew up without a dishwasher (when we asked our parents why we didn't have one my dad responded, "what do you mean? We have six!" referring to us kids). As a

So, IMO what is actually cool about this is it will allow you to detect scroll position without JS, which opens up a whole bunch of very nice posibilities!

Very simple CSS only example, including JS-free toggling: https://codepen.io/theprojectsomething/pen/oNQYqRw Note: Could be simplified with the :has selector but it isn't currently supported in Firefox.

IMHO reading competency starts at home, not in the classroom. Kids need to be interested in reading, and that's up to the parents more than it is to the school. My very unique / personal take. Have been doing sight words with my 5

Agree it doesn't feel like a lot. We run our house, including a decent sized pool pump, off solar for most of the day. A Pi seems like very small fry in the scheme of things. Getting something like this up and running in a few short ho

I recently used Cairns city council's exhaustive tree map to match and identify a beautiful weed tree that had popped up in my front yard (to a tree in a nearby park). Turns out it's actually an edible fruit tree (a damson plum) s

Sanity has prevailed! Great work from the WebKit team, leading the way here. Not to mention great solve on the `color: blue` fiasco. Balances an edge-case compromise nicely, and leaves it open to future improvements. Bravo.
