That is nothing compared to interest expense on CD's or other interest bearing accounts. Checking accounts are one of the most attractive sources of funding for banks (notwithstanding maturity mismatch).

Why does everyone keep referring to checking accounts as "loss leaders"? They are more like "income leaders" - the banks are funding themselves at basically 0% and then earning the spread on whatever they invest in....

Not sure why you're getting downvoted... I've lived here the same amount of time and absolutely agree. It's maddening the complete inaction and lack of desire to fix the problem.

This article's title is pretty terrible... "say hello to full employment" - then proceeds to discuss the employment situation in Iowa for the length of the article.

This is something that I feel continually comes up when dealing with implementing data structures in a higher level language, and repeatedly confused me when I was learning this stuff. I always found it misleading for example, to use an exi

This is a hard problem... I also wanted to do something similar for years, but EatThisMuch beat me to it and did a fairly good job. It's challenging because you can't optimize using continuous variables, since you aren't goin

Fair point... I think I just wanted to give a few examples that quickly came to mind. Maybe Volkswagen wasn't the best one.

I figured there would be fact checking: "what about this person?". Yes, I know there were some repercussions e.g. Schmidt for Volkswagen, and some really small players in the financial crisis, but overall most of the top guys wal

The sad reality is, this type of behavior is not confined to one party or the other. Money should have no place in politics, otherwise you end up with a plutocracy in a democracies clothing, which is where we have been for some time now. E

How the eff would he know that? If you've spent your entire life in one state, and it changes, how can you possibly know what was the normal state?

It's been a problem for a long time with which I've had first hand experience. Years ago when I was in college a collector called my parent's house after being rebuked by me and convinced them to pay off the "debt"

Great course, learned a ton from it, but yeah lesson 3 where you had to build / follow him building a regex interpreter was definitely a beatdown for me. Everything else was pretty manageable, but still challenging.

I found 4clojure great when starting out as well. I am definitely more of a 'hands on' learner, so these exercises were great for me. However my absolute favorite language agnostic tool for learning, like you, is Advent of Code.

I disagree w/ this comment. The types of problems where it disallows using built-ins are typically those that have you re-implementing a function for purposes of learning. The implementation of that function, in my experience, is sti

Because you buy at a given yield, dictated by the coupon and the purchase price / maturity. Duration (sensitivity to interest rates) affects the price PRIOR to maturity, not at maturity. If you buy a bond at a 5% yield to maturity, a

That's all find and well, and using the "dividend discount model" is one of the many methods of valuation, but not every stock pays a dividend. Those that do can cut them at their leisure.

It is not manipulation. The stock is tremendously overvalued and has been basically forever, but that doesn't mean it will go down. Unfortunately "fundamental value" doesn't mean shit in a popularity contest where you
