I 100% agree with you. I've both telecommuted and worked in-person, and there is nothing that beats face to face interaction. Period. The 'oh I need alone time to solve problems' excuse is as awful and trite a cliché as 'programmers drink

Whistleblower? Leaking the single video was arguably whistleblowing. Dumping documents en masse without knowledge of their contents is not, by any stretch of the word, whistleblowing. Regardless, whether you agree with the leaking, in whole

I was at HOPE and saw this talk. The irony of "Stop Snitching" shirts appearing on crowds of people who have almost undoubtedly spent zero minutes being interrogated by even local police was not lost on me. It's a well-worn topic, but I was

My group of peers does the same thing. It's a pretty broad cross section of nerds (as broad as that can be) -- the channel is busy 8-5 weekdays and dead outside those hours. Basically, they're my virtual (and one physical) officemates.

That's an overly simplistic framing of 'NoSQL'. Despite every piece of FUD to the contrary, 'NoSQL' is a stupid name for a set of tools designed to solve an entirely different set of problems. I don't want some data in a relational model.

Right, I implied that it had something to do with being a startup because it does. In this specific example. I'm not saying that 'all startups good, all big company bad' is some sort of globally applicable law and I'm not sure how or why an

I didn't say otherwise. I'm saying that my current job, taken as a whole, as valued by me, benefits me more than my last job.

That's probably true, but there's a lot more that goes into employment decisions beyond compensation. As an early startup employee, I'm working for (all things considered) less money than I was when I was working in the defense industry. Bu

The biggest problem with C# is the .Net ecosystem. Without (much) an open source community, it is and remains a tiny pond, full of crap, including a million shitty web applications and all the .Net baggage (Visual Basic anyone?) Which is a

I agree, and I think it's a side effect of the polarization that's happened in the database world. Picking the term 'NoSQL' was maybe a bit aggressive, as it grouped a bunch of new ideas and projects under one banner as well as defined a cl

Not a bad (albeit brief) overview. We're just starting out with CouchDB and haven't gotten to the point where we need to scale past a single instance -- though I can see it coming soon :) I'm pretty head over heels with Couch -- it fills it

I didn't think it was all that bad, or at least I didn't read that far. Calling text a "string" is one I am constantly trying to explain to my wife. "You know, some text, a string?" "No...?"

As someone who develops things in the arena of Facebook, this makes me feel better about the long-term viability of the platform. Smaller developers don't want to see the biggest developers threaten to (attempt to) pull the rug out from und

In defense of this post, raging against the decisions of a corporation (or any other entity) is so often followed by great waves of apathy and submission. This is a gentle reminder that you have a choice and you can vote with your wallet. (
