Not all of us have done it. I'm staying in the Midwest as a software engineer so I can be near my parents. I might not make 300k but I'm doing well and I see my family once a week at least. It just depends what your priorities a

Fair enough. But when the choice is a 2080 for 699 with RTX and their new 2080 competitor without RTX for 2080, or no AMD card at all, it's not a hard choice.

Do you live in a really high LOC area? Or are you exaggerating?

Totally agree. People will do what they have to to not starve.

But if demand for low competence people goes down, those people aren't learning on the job, therefore decreasing the average competence of the workforce.

You'd dole out UBI biweekly or whatever to solve the same problems that food stamps solve? I agree it's a good question though.

If you're not exaggerating you need to nip that in the bud. Printer issues at 3am? Have two classes of alerts and send printer issues to somebody else, or worst case email notification for the morning.

I have ran into this stuff on accident before. Try something like "family nude".

Agreed. We call that team "operations research" and they are all PhDs. The ML devs build the pipelines and deal with engineering concerns around having/moving/securing lots of data.

Good job. I think determination and willpower like you have is fairly rare, at least where I'm from (Midwest US).

Yes, it goes into detail about this in the npr article linked by GP. There is even a consulting company whose job it is to recommend people who are on welfare that could be on disability, and then help them fill out the forms and get Dr. co

Some companies are coming away from the dark side here. I have like 10 accounts on Mint and I think 3 of them are read-only. Coinbase is one for sure, and maybe Capital One?

Does it have value to society? That is the question. Of course it has value to people if they are willing to pay for it.

It's interesting that you talk about "team's using monorepos". I think that's different than what the article is arguing against, which is an entire company (100+ devs) using a monorepo. A team with 5 services and

If I am being honest, as an engineering manager, I really hate to have to fire people. I have done it a few times in my career and I still remember every 15 second block of time in each of the meetings. So my hiring bar is pretty high now.

Maybe you know, but Android handles this just fine. I was Apple-only for probably 7 years but just got a Pixel 2. It's..nice.

Not really. I mean, you're still testing that the compiler works and that the memory works. ;)
