At my company, we prepare one-off marketing and legal email blasts in advance, and need the final recipient list a couple days before sending. This allows time for processing the list for opt-outs, duplicates, etc.

This is incredibly true. In programming, just as in construction, "jargon" is required to keep things concise and to the point. Many times this "obfuscation" is really just necessity.

If you open it in IE, it asks to display insecure content. If you click yes, the site works. (You can click buttons). They must have linked a .js that wasn't on a https.

Yes, but what percentage of email is spam? Probably higher than 40%. Gmail accounts are much easier to setup than facebook accounts (which require email accounts).
