Financial privacy and national security are fundamentally at odds. With financial privacy and real freedom, you can hire a competing army. The state will never allow large scale financial privacy because it poses an existential threat to t

How are people going to pay for things? With no power or network, card payments stop working, and so do ATMs.

Nah. All of Spotify’s discovery is paid placement payola. It’s annoying and gross and ruins the product.

Burning books and censoring media has rarely been a path to fostering intellectualism. You call it an app ban, but really it’s just press censorship.

One of these that has no camera would be cool. Alternately, a thicker phone with more battery and no camera bump. Either would be fine. This is the worst of both worlds.

I never copy and paste passwords. Any time you find yourself wanting to do that, alarm bells should be ringing. Password managers can’t help you if you don’t use them properly. Spotify steals (and presumably uploads) your clipboard, as w

The failure here was that his password manager was not configured and he manually copied and pasted the credentials into the wrong webpage . A password manager can’t manage passwords if you don’t configure it and use it.

You can use software u2f (iCloud supports this), you don’t need Yubikeys. Also, Yubikeys work on phones just fine, via both NFC and USB.

Can happen to anyone… who doesn’t use password manager autofill and unphishable 2FA like passkeys. Most people who get phished aren’t using password managers, or they would notice that the autofill doesn’t work because the domain is wrong.

Yes, though IIRC the setting didn’t exist until after I wrote that blog post. Even “High” is still total shit. I frequently contemplate hacking the client app and recompiling it to remove image recompression entirely.

ADP is off by default (this is why iMessage isn’t really e2ee), and importantly, isn’t available in all countries . I believe in the UK you are legally barred from having access to iCloud ADP.

Why do people want logs of conversations for years and years? All of my Signal chats are set to 4 week expiry. Any media I want to keep, I save to the device. I don’t audio record my conversations with close friends and family; why would I

If Signal is offering pay-for-media-storage, it would be nice to be able to pay to send full-resolution media. I’m a photographer and every image sent via Signal that isn’t zipped first is TOTALLY DESTROYED by silent recompression. https:

You can’t buy gift cards without soft ID these days. Additionally, the ability to pay in cash isn’t needed for buying coffee, it’s needed for paying for legal defense, publishing, transport, and a bunch of other things. The issue isn’t th

This is solved easily by one additional sanity check API call to a different AI. I’m not sure why people think these bugs are like, complete showstopper insurmountable things. It’s a quick fix.

You can’t pay in cash via an app. An alternate reality where nobody can transact without the state seeing it in realtime and having a veto over it (without any burden of proof) is not glorious; that’s called a dystopia. Just because the cap
