Yep. WhatsApp is better and Signal is better still, but iMessage's level of privacy and security is more than enough for someone who isn't specifically targeted by a nation-state-level actor.

For non-burner phones, just Google the phone number---you'll probably get a sketchy "look this person up for $XX.YY" telephone directory page that will contain their full name and age, if not their address.

I like how I can control the rate at which I scroll with the mouse more easily than with the keyboard. It's a more intuitive movement that I can adjust to match the speed of my reading.

GUI Emacs is a very thin GUI skin on TTY Emacs. As an example someone brought up elsewhere in this thread, you can't scroll (with the mouse) in Emacs without bringing the cursor with you. Scrolling without moving the cursor doesn'

I'm genuinely curious: do you not read through code from top to bottom? That's a very common thing that I do, and using the mouse is a comfortable way of accomplishing it.

To an extent, yes, but I would say that the Vim philosophy involves utilizing external tools much more than in Emacs. Vim packages like the one for Go ( https://github.com/fatih/vim-go ) feel better-integrated into Vim t

I think that the Emacs concept is really good, but it clearly has a lot of problems that make it altogether unattractive to new potential users. - The keybindings are not the standard CUA ones. Even with Cua Mode, every page on the intern

You can pull the rubber TrackPoint cover off and disable the sensor in the BIOS, but the trackpads on these laptops aren't always great (at least if you're used to MacBooks). I've learned to like it, but I can see how it migh

Luckily, there are usually third party reviews with accurate battery life claims, at least for more popular laptops (like any ThinkPad). You're right that Apple does do a good job of accurately advertising battery life. On the other ha

To be fair, all of those are pretty old (the T520 is from 2011), so it's expected that they would work flawlessly---it's the very new X1 Extremes and a couple of other models that are problematic. For the most part, staying one ge

I stand corrected on the number of strands of HPV that Gardasil 9 protects against. That's more comprehensive than I remembered (and I've also received it). Thanks for correcting me!

Given the extremely high rates of HSV-1 infection (roughly half of everyone 14-49 and more among older people [0]), I'm guessing that it would be difficult to eradicate it using a vaccine (although I'm certainly not an expert). As

It’s a separate website that lets you snapshot websites at any time, so that you can access them in geo-restricted areas (like the EU for a lot of sites) and possibly avoid paywalls.

Speaking from my friend's experience, school districts totally still do that. Their uptime only has to be good, not amazing. I don't think he's ever run into any HVAC issues, though.

I think the problem is that most kids don’t really care about the material—if they are not understanding it, they’ll do something else during the lecture instead of asking for help. Struggling but trying hard is far more indicative of succe

Fair enough. I’m still surprised at just how unreadable (for me) the wasm2c output was, though. The compiler must have done quite a bit of optimizing that wasm2c was unable to undo.

Thanks for replying! Most of what you wrote makes reasonable sense to me. I guess that a lot of the syntax decisions are subjective. Even if I don’t necessarily agree with all of them, I can appreciate your viewpoints better now.

This looks much nicer than the wasm2c output for that binary. I compiled it with `clang wasm.c -c -target wasm32 -O2` just like in the instructions (I'm on LLVM 10), and used the latest wasm2wat with `wasm2wat -f wasm.o` and got this i

Do you not like those because they're unfamiliar? What about the syntax indicates over-engineering? Here's what I see in your example: - @ indicates built-in function, which avoids namespace collisions. - Optional types via the ?,

Even if coffee shops aren't open, the advice still stands---you can (at least in the US) go out and work at a park or another outdoor spot without running into too many people.
