That's true; that would be the better solution. Requesting a refund before deleting the app would give the user an error message telling them to delete it.

I'm glad that Apple can't remotely delete apps from my device. It would be somewhat dystopic if they had that capability.

What fate are you referring to with Snapchat? I’m pretty close to the target audience for both Snapchat and TikTok and nearly everyone I know (edit: close to my age) uses both.

I feel like old stuff always feels way slower than I remembered when I revisit it years later. I couldn't believe how slow of an iPhone I lived with when I booted my old one up recently. Plus, most of modern Excel's apparent slown

Targeted advertisements like the ones built into Firefox's new tab page are the exact kind of thing that privacy-conscious people like to block. When I recommend Firefox to a less-technical friend or relative and suggest that they use

GPT-3 guesses the next word or words after a given input, allowing it to write articles that make at least some sense. Translation of a textbook (especially math) would be way out of its wheelhouse.

The latter. I'm having trouble finding an unbiased benchmark right now, but Safari is quite a bit less of a battery hog than either Chrome or Firefox.

By default, the Firefox new tab page has ads and sponsored content, which neither Chrome nor Safari have. This "feature" certainly decreases trust in Firefox as the more privacy-friendly option, although it's easy to disable

In the case of Gmail, you’re also their customer if you pay for it via G Suite. My support experiences with Google have been very good in that situation.

Yes, user agents are a mess (see this comment for non-Apple examples: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23910637 ). They're not a good way to detect features as a web developer.

Don't think so. They used to use Cloudflare but stopped. To my knowledge, it's a single server without a database (using the filesystem as a database).

Yeah, I'm not sure where the comparison comes from. CGI usually meant one script per page, which only bears a slight resemblance to microservices. It doesn't really have anything to do with service encapsulation or API consistency

Yep, I think you're right. Apple needs to put permissions on things like the clipboard for all apps. I certainly don't support the CCP, but extending that distrust to TikTok is somewhat illogical when there is no good evidence of

Also not an iOS developer, but I think that apps enter a “suspended” stage when you close them or press the power button to save battery life. If you look at apps’ crash logs, you can see that they are occasionally killed by a system proces

Now that even iMessage supports threaded discussions (in iOS 14), I think it would be great if Discord added this too. They’re very nice when there are multiple overlapping conversations and you don’t want to break off into two separate cha

I’d argue that LÖVE is more appropriate for most games and similarly approachable. That said, lots of people already play Roblox, so it’s a good option for people who want to go from being consumers to being creators.

It’s unfortunate that Lua makes some strange decisions, but the powerful functionality totally outweighs the weirdness (metatables are especially cool). I really like Lua, especially for game programming with LÖVE.

In my personal experience, the Reddit comment-hiding system only gets triggered for particularly horrible comments, not just controversial ones. It must take into account the upvote-to-downvote ratio.

I'm also interested in the stories of people who have had lasting effects from COVID-19. I'm guessing that those stories also suffer from a bit of selection bias.
