This seems to be measuring the volume of messages with particular keywords on each day. I think that people wishing "happy birthday/thanksgiving/christmas/Valentine's Day" may not actually mean they are happy.

Bananas are the prime cautionary tale against monoculture. The number of native breeds which are now gone for the sake of promotion of one particular breed leads to less resilience against disease and pests. Just in my corner of India, ther

On a related note: I suspect that humans cannot "guesstimate" numbers greater than 20 by sight. I have tried this experiment on myself, friends and relatives and so far no one has succeeded. Take a glance at the next longish queue

Very strange. Early yesterday morning, I thought out of nowhere: "hey! around 2011 or so, our lounge in our organization used to have Linux Journal. Wonder what happened to that subscription?" So sad to see this happen. I personal

Post Jio, India has one of the cheapest data rates in the world. Sometimes when you go elsewhere, one tends to accidentally turn on data and use it the same way as in India, and I have been bitten like this once. Luckily it was prepaid, so

Society has always made sure that most people remain in the rat race. During agrarian times, it was back-breaking work. During the industrial revolution, it was in sweat shops. Once office became computerised, it became office drudge work.

There is a slight insinuation in your comment that it was ignorant villagers who killed off large number of tigers due to population pressures. Superstition and a reaction against man-eating tigers were not the cause of the near extinction.

This is rather virulent. As a liberal, I do not agree with you. I am sure there are human beings on the other side, and dialogue will help. Baseline thinking is not always relevant. In fact, I believe it is through the moderates on the othe

Where are you quoting these figures from? The minimum wage is considerably higher than Rs. 100 per day in most parts of India. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_Wages_Act_1948 Rs. 200 is not a big amount. Of course

Boeing is undermining its credibility through the promotion of such strategies. I am kind of taken aback that even after the death of >300 passengers, their attitude is to weasel out of the situation with a sham certification? Of course,

I agree with this view. You still need gardeners, maintenance staff, custodians, plumbers, electricians, drivers and shop staff. They cannot afford to live inside current smart cities. Most middle-class and rich think of smart cities as jus

There are no state level income taxes in India, afaik. However, the Goods and Services Tax on many items is very high - 28%. So if you earn 100 rupees at the top slab, then you effectively have 58.3 after the income tax, and say you use it

That is true. But please keep in mind that the whole MCAS fiasco was precipitated by a dubious cost-cutting initiative related to an engine placed more in front than would be aerodynamically stable. The game was lost in the first quarter.
