I'm not in it for the karma and don't worry about being down-voted when I'm writing a thoughtful but perhaps contrary comment. Sometimes (like now) it teaches me that I'm out of step with the "mood" of the com

Beautiful (and I love the hidden nerd-cred). In the late '90s I bought a PCB briefcase in Germany and thought I'd reached the pinnacle of nerdom but this is clearly better. - https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia

I didn't intend it ... and it looks like I probably shouldn't have gone reminiscing in an HN comment!

I tried writing a production software system in Python in about 2009 using TurboGears (RoR but for Python). The whole system suffered from the well-known GIL problems so the project was rewritten in JavaEE. My understanding is that the GI

This is pretty similar to Ross Perot splitting the republican vote in the U.S. '92 election except that Perot and Bush should have been political allies and instead split the vote in favor of Clinton. I can't think of an example

A bit off-topic but why does the Mozilla Foundation have researchers looking at this sort of data (I've been donating assuming I was supporting Firefox which frankly is the only thing I care about from Mozilla).

If I could only get a ride to the hole at one of the poles I'd be happy to go visit the mole people. I also heard a rumor that they're suing Australia over the use of "down under".

Nope ... there are a ton of 30-somethings writing "easy" advice like this and bemoaning the ignorance of their twenties. I'm a few decades older yet and can tell you that I'm still learning and integrating new ideas int

One of the local car dealers here in central PA (US) often has one or two of the tiny Kei pick-up trucks for sale ... truly perfect for some of the business who only drive around town (as noted, lower speeds are a key).

That's not at all how I remember it! (j/k). I think it's a good reminder that our impressions of the world around us are personalized and that they may not be representative of reality. P.S. Sorry if I reopened an old wound

No ... my mind says the dress is white and gold but the white has that shadow look.

I see it tinted the shade of blue you'd expect if the dress was in a shadow (contrasted by the bright background).

I see it as white and gold (the wrong colors).

It's illegal to jam signals but it's not illegal to make your classrooms Faraday cages. Some relatively cheap metal mesh put up behind the drywall would be somewhat more expensive but would solve the problem.

I always love the extra landing gear added to the Concorde to avoid tail strikes on rotation - sometimes "patches" are the correct solution to infrequent problems!

Yes and I'd say the same for my previous job. Prior to these positions I spent years in the CATV industry and I still feel bad when I see people living their lives in front of the boob-tube.

Maybe if you claim it in a head-line and it isn't true, you should be forced to perform the act indicated. I'm smiling while thinking of the scientist hiking through Alaska over a distance that took the Mammoth 28 years. Of cour

Wouldn't the capture of a PBH by Sol be more like forming a binary system with a large distance between the two bodies? Intuitively it feels like capturing something with that much mass would result in our sun "wobbling" wit
