How do smartphones address the privacy concerns? I'm still surprised people are buddy-buddy with commodity smartphone manufacturers. > What is stopping them from collecting and storing these samples for "training" models?

Apple as well. Everyone's failure to commit in this situation enabled a highly-integrated competitor to clean up shop. It's funny how much clearer OpenCL's value prop is in hindsight...

It looks like I was wrong. Same family of hardware/drivers, different OS. Same principle and concept, though; I think BSD's success in the console industry proves that open OSes can find use (albeit as components of closed systems

No, I think the state will do a better job at preserving individual freedom than the free market will. Normally I wouldn't take that stance, but the alternative is Apple's lock-in mentality and Google's neverending advertisem

YouTube's tax is not comparable to the Play Store or the App Store because other identical services exist. Pretty much anyone immediately familiar with Google or Apple's infrastructure would laugh that off - you cannot replace the

It doesn't, but competing with OpenAI does. Google likes their ducks in a row. Google Search and YouTube are prime examples; every interaction is subsidized with an advertisement. It's not hard to look at a series of screenshots f

It's always going to be a touchy subject, a lot of people will see attacks on Doctorow as a denouncement of his ideas. Most people probably agree with what he has to say, just in simpler terms with less sensationalist framing. His use

Because decades ago, "figuring it out" entailed visiting a website and downloading a software installer. Why is Apple expecting everyone to forget about that and pay them the difference instead?

There's plenty of software that straight-up doesn't ship on the App Store. One could even argue that the Mac fosters it's own class of unique software since the App Store tithe is optional. I don't think Pro Tools or Ste

Making a competitive alternative to iMessage is a game of whack-a-mole that you will always lose, too. Apple would never give a third-party the same level of control they have to integrate with iOS. So, Beeper's approach here at least

The "actual people" using Linux on the desktop are not running .so files off the internet. I get what you're saying, but you know it's facetious to pretend that packaging is simple on Mac and Windows too.

On a large enough timescale I don't think you can reasonably expect this on any of this big 3 OSes. From a less macro perspective, I think tools like Appimage and Flatpak will fill that role.
