No, it isn't. People in our industry commonly use the word scalability to denote metrics such as response time but that's just plain wrong. You can have a website that takes 3 minutes to load yet still be scalable. As long as it takes 3 min

Thanks but that only works on Firefox and I generally prefer to use Chrome since it's so much faster. (The difference is even more striking in Linux than it is in Windows.)

Can someone explain how this isn't insider trading? I don't really know what the rules are but after reading that article this is what I understood: Cuban gets an email and has a private conversation with Mamma.com CEO where get gets told t

I suppose. But abstraction layers give you so much more than that. A good counter-example for why you should use one is simply prepared queries. Doing stuff like: mysql_query("SELECT something FROM table WHERE that='" . mysql_real_escape($v

I certainly wouldn't bet on that. Did you read the UI research the Office team published with the release of the 2007 version? The amount of work they put in determining what their clients needed and how they used the software and what woul

Projects like Google Native Client ( http://code.google.com/p/nativeclient/ ) makes me think that. If you can execute X86 code and leverage hardware acceleration through a browser that would probably be worth telling people to download Ch

Yeah, I couldn't understand that either. He goes on saying "database abstraction layers" are bad but then, at the end says he uses a "library" that abstracts away database issues such as persistent connections, replication awareness and loa

No I won't. I've been refusing to follow any links to TC for a while now and other than the occasional tinyurl'd link on twitter I've managed to avoid that cesspool entirely. If news.yc would stop voting up every article they write to the f

The most common quote I see is: "640k should be enough for anybody. - Bill Gates" and it bugs me every time. Thanks to the grandparent for setting the record straight.

I've discussed this with some friends in the past. I think the tragedy that befell Software Engineering was that most companies had no Engineering track for a career. To advance your career you generally had to get yourself promoted into a

That example was particularly egregious. PHP uses copy-on-write so the temp variable held a pointer to the 500k of data they mentioned, not a copy. Had they concatenated a small string to the end then PHP wouldn't copied the data and used
