That would make for a good feature request. On the right of flag we could add "merge with" and take a news.yc url and if enough people submitted the same url a mod could merge all the comments into the old story.

Except that when it gets shut down the "real hackers" will be able to link up to forgotten/abandoned satellite networks and still be able to communicate and plot their various schemes. You know, like Die Hard 4.

The mainstream media will never use the word "cracker". It's much too racially loaded.

That's hardly the point. If you're going to make a mini-app and don't want to support certain values just don't make them possible rather than have buggy/wrong behavior. If at least both refused to update it would be a little better than no

It's pretty buggy. It refuses to update if it'll cost you over 100k in fees. Try an average transaction size of 3$ and a total monthly volume of 1,000,000$ for example. If you're going to provide a slider with only a few pre-set values you

You made me hit some major cognitive dissonance here: Additionally, both Microsoft and Boeing more directly support the state economy in other ways (many donations, and support of public works, etc etc). Obviously, these tax breaks do lose

I would be very wary of spending money on paid dating sites. There are just too many stories about fraud: http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts2493442.aspx (Google will find you many more) okcupid and plentyoffish are much much bette

Another lucrative possibility in trends is stagnation. The market very often has been there quite a while with major players in it that are concentrating on monetizing their current offerings while being completely blind to the fact that ne

Respect the readers is a good point. By starting with that sentence you're essentially saying: Before I say what I think might add to the conversation here's me talking about how I care more about my karma than the conversation itself. It i

I doubt it's a question of data control. EC2 is significantly more expensive than running your own servers so it's a good idea to keep close to your base load on your own servers and then just scale up/down as necessary with EC2. This way y

Not really. More like a political story with no relevance to hacker news gets downvoted. (And is clearly mentioned as off-topic in the guidelines: "Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some

Seems simple enough, just create a corporate account that they can use on their work computer and that they don't have the password to. If you're still worried, change the password every time someone quits. (Which is usually a good idea.)

In Canada there's a preliminary hearing of some sort (not sure about the specifics) to see if the case is even justified in being tried. The vast majority of stories like these are all thrown out.

I think their fear stems from something else entirely. While what you mention is indeed a factor, I think the greatest factor is the fact that on the internet, ROI can be calculated. The metrics are much more precise and I have a feeling th
