Slight bit of pedantry: only the AppKit (1989) component of Cocoa predates the web (1990) while Foundation and Core Data (both 1994) came later. Of course, many nowadays-integral features of the web also came after its initial release, such

Not really, there's always room for improvement. Look at all the times (starting with Mortal Kombat or so) people have said video game graphics can't get any noticeably better.

I am admittedly pretty solidly middle-class, but I've never had a non-Apple computer last anywhere near 5+ years, so I'd say they were still getting a pretty decent deal relatively speaking. But in any case Macs and iDevices are d

The arbitrary removal of 32-bit app support could be thought of as a heuristic to clear away abandonware. Which, for obvious reasons (security), Apple would like to have as little of in its App Store as possible. It also lets them aggressiv

Didn't mean to imply that was a good idea, just that it's possible. It looks like the top supercomputers are getting close to surpassing 64 petabytes (56 bits byte-addressed) of virtual memory space, so 16-bit tags are right out.
205.
by smitherfield 9y ago
And I believe all the major 64-bit instruction sets actually use 48-bit addresses at present, so software/compilers can use the top 16 as tag bits. (In addition to the bottom 3, assuming alignment on 8-byte boundaries).
