The number of bits you need in a bloom filter varies as a function of the number of items you have (in addition to the desired error rate). Assuming a 100 items, a 1e-8 error rate only requires 480 bytes (= ~5 bytes per item). You also don'

Yeah, the issue was that tech VCs (even non-technical ones) pride themselves on being able to find and recognize technical talent. You're really cutting to the core of their perceived value by telling them they're actually terrible at it. M

One thing I take issue with, as an entrepreneur, is that he explains a 'tell' for a mediocre management team is that he'll send a talented member to a team and they say to me, “we don’t really have a role for that person.” Well, I'd often

In my experience, head hunters usually get paid a fee equal to N months of your salary (where, most often, 3<=N<=6). If they negotiate my monthly salary up to 12K instead of 10K they'll probably make 6K-12K extra, so they do have an

What " silly quantity of math " did you do to reach your conclusion? I would have assumed that this sort of thing was simply an unquantifiable aesthetic preference (as long as you're below the char width of the screen, of course). I'm very

I went through a length evaluation process of Riak recently, and came away with a generally positive impression. First of all, it's beautifully engineered, as long as you just need a KV store or a graph DB (I wasn't in love with the MapRedu

I meant around $500K. I think that's the point where it's reasonably likely you have a secretary/personal-assistant to take care of those last little bits of outsourceable work.

There's a (relatively low) upper bound on the price of water based on cost of desalinating water (turning ocean water into drinkable water). It looks like, today, water desalination can be done for about a $1000 per acre-foot, which is only

To be fair, the money/time tradeoff breaks down pretty quickly - you've almost certainly used all the easy wins by the time you're even earning mid six-figures. Basically, there are only so many hours of outsourceable stuff in your day. Onc

It's funny how quickly you get used to the mindset that it's a good decision to trade money for time. If I value my marginal time at $50/hr, and unconsciously always choose to pay to save time, the mindset becomes ingrained and is hard to r

It's a pretty straightforward implication of bayes' law that the absence of evidence is evidence of absence. In fact, we can quite easily quantify just how strong the evidence it provides is. http://lesswrong.com/lw/ih/absence_of_evidence_

U.S. mobile users sent an average of 357 texts per month in the second quarter of 2008 versus an average of 204 calls, the report said. The average person sends ~ 10 text messages and makes 7 calls a day? Wow, I'm behind the curve ...

The obvious answer is for Google to charge for support plans, like AWS. E.g., $100/month for up to 3 hours of support a month with 4 hour response time, $500/month for up to 10 hrs/month with 15 minute response times, etc.
