"From the age of zero we [Israelis] are educated to challenge the obvious, ask questions, debate everything" Why do you think they don't question their religion?

The reason the market is so unfriendly to individual purchasers (high cost, possibility of getting dropped, etc) is that the entire industry is built around and optimized for selling to large corporations.

I would contend that the root cause is that we expect our employers to provide our health insurance. We don't (usually) expect them to provide our housing, food, car, or other necessities of life. I'm not an accountant, but I understand tha

There are, obviously, far more ruby/python programmers. But, at the very most, I might only ever need a dozen Lisp programmers and I already know 20 that I would love to work with. Lisp is even pretty easy to pick up if you're smart know ot

That's a fair point. For a programmer without Lisp experience, that would be true. But I've written enough Lisp-based webapps that there aren't really that many 'unforseen' problems for me anymore (rule of thumb: use software by Edi Weitz -

There are different implementations, of course. But the the multiple version problem was worked out over a decade ago.

Heh, funny you learned from the Winston & Horn book - that was my first too. The biggest philosophical problem I have with Lisp (and a lot of dynamically typed languages) is the lack of compile time safety-nets (it really bites me when

I think you drawing that conclusion may be a result of how I structured my essay (I introduced my conclusion, then my reasoning). I freely admit my personal biases and experiences eliminated a lot of potentially good options without ever gi

Nope - just a style thing. You don't need lambdas either - named functions are just as powerful. But I often think 'functionally.' Since I have options, I'd rather go with a language that allows me to program how I think - instead of being

Thanks. Sorry for the trouble before. I had an old personal wordpress blog that I'd originally posted this on - but there were some technical issues with upgrading WordPress to a modern version. Just reposted the same content on Posterous.

Sorry - this isn't my startup website. It's just my personal blog - and I was lazy and went with Wordpress on a cheap VPS. It seems to be my VPS provider's problem (i.e., I can't even reboot or use the console). If I can't get it working in

Which pages in particular were you thinking of? We're only really using the modal displays for login, create-account, and 'flag-deal' right now. We also added some intro words up top. We have a pretty easy to use API that might be integrate

We have a handful of deals in Boston/Chicago/SF - but not really enough to be useful. Unfortunately, NYC is the only city with reasonable coverage right now ... If I'm going to be showing deals not near you, I'd rather be showing great deal

Hmm, do you mean saving more than the BDB .log files? Basically, I'm backing those up initially - then running a 'catastrophic recovery' (and some sanity chceks) on the data I've backed up. Once the backup checks out, I delete old .log file

My initial thoughts are pretty much lead generation. If we know where you are, and what you're interested in buying right now, it's very easy to provide you with very relevant (and immediately actionable) ads. In the short term, I just want

Thanks for the interest old-gregg. I have a series of blog posts planned that can help answer those sort of questions. I'll try to publish them over the next week or two. The general topics I had in mind were: -Why Lisp -Overall architectur

It appears that someone used Word's insane 'smart quote' character (which isn't valid UTF8). I'll have to put a filter in for that (and scrub the existing data). Thanks for the heads up - I wasn't aware of that. (interesting article I found
