My concern about this state of affairs in software engineering is that it may be producing generations of engineers who couldn't actually build/conceive things better (eg. Building a rendering engine or a mobile OS) if they wanted

Same here. Unless all parties use the same encrypted email service, this made no sense to me actually.

I think one should write the code that's most suitable for a specific scenario. Senior vs junior has nothing to do with this (at least not in a categorical way). I have met many who call themselves seniors who really just aren't a

I can't see how these accidents point to cheap incompetent labour unless you are saying that the product managers, chief engineers, principal engineers are being outsourced. Are you saying that a plane that tends to tilt up dangerously

Well, it's not like the professional journalists don't lie at all for profit and self-preservation. Lol. Facebook does a lot of disageeable things but making everyone a journalist isn't one of them. This just decentralised jo

I studied that book for my literature course in high school. That book is a joke. It tried to imitate the story of the buddha but twisted it to fit a western narrative. Author did himself a great disservice writing it. Would have been bette

The issue I had with the original article is the way it starts by shedding what the author considers as myths. As I mentioned, to understand Buddha's story, it should be done in the context of the most important teachings of Buddhism w

Wasn't beating about the bush. I just forgot her name. Either way, her name wasn't important enough for me to look it up. The point was, someone who has no credentials about gender equality, video games or psychology were raising

There's a whole lot of people who have studied fields that are irrelevant to today's industry needs and have ended up with no real marketable skill. Various forms of activist movements have money in it. Modern developed societies

I use Duck Duck Go and I actually find it better than Google Search (better in the sense that there's something refreshing about the results I get as opposed to the stuff I see on Google Search, I can't comment on accuracy). I nev

Or you are just so bogged down in history that you have a difficulty changing your opinion. Few decades is a long time in our line of work. Microsoft didn't change out of charity or ethics. They were forced by the direction industry wa

Not really sure if Google is the right gatekeeper for this kind of thing. Google as a company has often take clear political stances.

That's a very good observation. I think it's true that having the free option changes the context very much. There are people who pay for paid password managers when free alternative products available. I myself pay for a number o

Nowadays if a site does this I simply don't visit it. If it's a really important site (which often does support FF anyway), I just use Edge. Chrome is now like an absolute last resort.

I don't think the comparison with literature makes sense. API is what defines a software. For instance, if someone copies Microsoft suite full public interface (including the UI which is part of the interface it would be a problem even

I was about to set up my own domain with a paid email account too. My reason was privacy. But then I was wondering even if I have my own encrypted email service, does it defeat the purpose if the sender is using Gmail? Since Google would st

I agree with the part that it's very good if a new developer gets to work with an amazing team. Thus us probably not mutually exclusive with earning potential either. Best people do tend to end up in places where they get paid well. Ob

Those access modifiers are there for a reason and they work very well in not just C++ in many other object oriented languages like C# and Java. So, using Python to justify that style of coding is a far cry from anything that is reasonable.
