Sometimes trolling is not false. You're making broad generalizations about the ruby community and it's members, many of whom do not fit your stereotypes. His generalizations fit well enough to include the dev teams of the core package man

On the other hand, there tends to be an inverse correlation between a European ethnic group's IQ scores in Europe and their IQ scores in the United States. Germans and Dutch score higher than the Europe-wide average, German-Americans and Du

Take home finals are not the norm at Harvard. Most final exams are proctored by old ladies from Cambridge who are very strict about everything. Where take home exams are used, a) they're usually harder than proctored exams, and b) they're u

Yeah maybe a bit, but to me full Stallmanesque would be avoiding proprietary software even when the free alternative is non-existent or significantly less functional. That is not the situation with text editors, unless I am missing somethin

Not to go all Stallmanesque here, but doesn't it bother you to use a proprietary text editor when there are so many excellent free/open-source ones around?

True, some other things have a greater impact on premature births than prenatal care, and the US system is shitty at those things as well. I picked access to prenatal care because it's one of the easiest ones to improve, it has a positive i

This kind of argument probably worked better in the 90s or something, but it does not hold as much water today. First, the exorbitant rate of medical inflation in our "market" healthcare system is a fiscal menace not only to the public sect

Your comment is correct but it doesn't contradict what you were replying to. An Algoloid language with closures and lambdas and tail-call optimization etc. can't do 100% of what a Lisp can do and maybe not even 80%, but it can still do "eno

Funny you should say that: just yesterday Reddit informed me that Lisp is 100% imperative because it has a loop keyword and allows destructive assignment.

I enjoy Lisp, but I got to agree with you about scheme debugging. MIT/GNU scheme has to be most unhelpful interpreter I've ever used. Error messages are loud, completely unhelpful, and by the end of it I was convinced the REPL was actively

Cheap shot: that's what Perl hackers say about readability. Python's support for functional idioms is limited by design . Python doesn't have to be good at everything to be a good language.

Industry settled on Linux in the 90s when a) there was lingering FUD from the AT&T lawsuit, b) everyone was afraid of "embrace and extend" which the BSD license arguably makes easier.

I'm talking about simplicity of implementation, not interface. The fact that you use a windowing system that was designed for remoting but not displaying wigets for not-remoting but displaying widgets does not make you (or me) smarter.

The problem is the GUI. X with multiple widget toolkits laid over it and a desktop environment laid over that is a lot of moving parts that can go wrong. Android and ChromeOS and TiVo and your embedded-Linux toaster don't have this problem.
