Not since 2012. Company ran on a big Oracle DB on very expensive Solaris machines. They started in 98 or 99 so this was a vaguely defensible choice. Several times we looked at moving the DB to Linux/x86 but Oracle's pricing made i

DBT is a good (not great) tool, but DBT Cloud just doesn't provide any value, much less enough to justify $100/seat. Unfortunately the business is doomed unless they can come up with a new business model. Two friends work there so

Yes. I'm doing it. It's not particularly hard. Any American software dev makes enough money to do so, as long as they avoid the high-cost cities, which is now easy.

If it costs 1 extra human 1 full year to build then you (roughly) broke even on that year and are up every subsequent year. And it doesn't cost nearly that much.

Please don't. CSV is one of the worst file formats ever conceived. Use (compressed) line-delimited JSON if you need a file of records.

Article itself is fine but the "conclusion" is loony. You can't draw conclusions about big data from toy experiments with small data.

Other than being owned by Paypal, it's fine. The APIs work and are well-documented. A company I worked for used them for ~7 years and never had any significant problems that I recall.

I did a similar one. For folks who signed into our app with Facebook login, we would go get all their Likes, all their Friends, and all their Friends' Likes. There was some vague idea that we could use this for marketing. The data volu

What annoyed me about Mighty was that it represented giving up on having fast, efficient software on our own machines. We COULD live in a world where 400+ tabs (typical for me) didn't require 32gb of RAM, but browser authors have cho

Employers lie. Every manager out there trying to hire tech employees -- unless they are literally at FAANG et al -- is struggling. All the good talent is being hoovered up by companies paying twice what you can pay. Your company makes somet

That's... how people make friends. Did you have friends in school? Same thing. Neighbors? Same thing. Soldiers that fought together and keep in touch after the war? Same thing. Befriend someone you run into at the gym? Same thing. Som

We had lots of convenient user interfaces on the web without JS. "The most simple things" absolutely do not require it. Simple things can be done in pure HTML. That's what the web has always fundamentally been about. You shou

I quit grad school after the first semester, moved back home, and took an entry-level software job at an internet company. This was early 2005. Completely different life than I would have had if I'd stayed in academia.
