Spoken like a programmer that has never had to fix TLB misses as a bottleneck. It’s actually quite common as the TLB is rather small. Not even enough for 2MB worth of 4K pages. You can use huge pages but it has all of the drawbacks of segme

Were you around back then? It’s realy hard to describe how much MS was hated. There’s nowhere near that animosity towards Google today.

If it were common I’m sure I would have seen it though... it’s not like most of us weren’t in uni for at least 4 years.

While it may be “cumbersome” from the programmers perspective - it’s certainly a lot faster than an MMU. There’s no universe where traversing a page table (actually a tree) in memory is faster than an offset and a bounds check.

Stay in one place long enough to see a few cycles and you’ll get nice and jaded. Today’s old and shitty was yesterday’s “proper way”. It can change in only a year or two. “Global” refractors always end unfinished and the code worse for the

Formal methods have seen adoption in hardware where the cost of bugs is much higher. The fact is it’s cheaper to patch buggy software than it is to apply formal methods. Quality has remained above a level that would impede progress, and bas

Rail freight in the US is the highest in the world. Europe focuses on passenger rail which is where the misconception comes from. However the vast majority of the freight is travelling cross country from west to east. Last mile rail is in

The note at the end is somewhat important. If you are deciding where to incorporate your startup and you are not a US citizen, ITAR is a good reason to avoid the USA. YC generally suggests US incorporation but it has real downsides, and

You may have caches or other optional buffers you can free. Or you may choose to save or do some other action to save user data. It doesn't solve the fact you don't have memory, but it does let you at least do something about it

I would say modern C++ encourages unique_ptrs and naked pointers for ephemeral references much more than shared_ptr. C++11 invented it after all while shared_ptr has been around longer. Some projects have gone as far as to say shared_ptr i

1) Don’t promise memory you don’t have. On windows VirtualAlloc will fail if it doesn’t have enough page file space to satisfy the request. This allows the application to do something smarter than with the false promise it gets from mmap. 2
