This is terrifying to me because I have the 3U version of that exact chassis and I was just thinking about upgrading from 2TB to 4TB drives.

In the Mars trilogy (Red Mars/Green Mars/Blue Mars) by Kim Stanley Robinson, the term "areology" was coined for describing geology-on-Mars. I always thought that was a great word.

$40 for a light, and better contrast, and better resolution. 800×600 was getting pretty long in the tooth; cramming 1024×768 into the same space may not sound like much, but I'm looking forward to the higher pixel density for sure.

Nope, that'll just get you the addresses being freed. This, on the other hand, seems to do what I expected: dtrace -n 'pid$target::free:entry { printf("%s: %s", probefunc, copyinstr(arg0)); }' -p <pid>

I'm surprised he went to the trouble of using `DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES` - DTrace makes this sort of thing trivial.... something like: #!/usr/sbin/dtrace pid$1:$2:free:entry { printf("%s: %x\n", probefunc, arg0); }

Every time I see a post like this (including Paul Miller over at the Verge), it reminds me of an obese person suddenly deciding to go anorexic. You know what the problem is? It's not the food. It's self-control, plain and simple.

When was the last time you looked at RAM prices? You can get 32 GB now for $100. (Complete insanity.)

How is Penny-Arcade's Kickstarter allowed then? (Not disagreeing, but it seems like they would run afoul of this if it were actually enforced.)

xargs is so 20th-century. parallel[0] is way more awesome (especially with all the multi-core systems everybody has now). Cool bonus: all the things you learn for xargs work in parallel too! [0]: http://www.gnu.org/software/parallel/

These times are for spinning-platter hard drives. I wonder what the numbers look like on a modern SSD?

If you do: #!/usr/bin/env scala !# it appears to work.

I wonder why they don't use #!/usr/bin/env scala as the first line instead. If there's some hack to support #!/bin/sh in the scala interpreter... ew.

Apparently node.js doesn't implement the DOMParser object, which means that you can't actually use jquery's parseXML method. That's a bummer :(

Depends on whether or not your side project uses more than 5MB of database storage. I'm running a tiny node.js app on Heroku and you get up to 750 hours per month of free CPU time, so I haven't paid a dime (but I am really in love with ho

Not that this helps you since there are no Thunderbolt peripherals yet, but supposedly Thunderbolt will let you daisy-chain multiple displays from that one port.

That makes no sense at all to me. If your IPv6 is working you can't go to the site to test it unless you also have working IPv4. There is absolutely no reason why test-ipv6.com can't have both an A record and an AAAA record.

Nobody is ready for IPv6 yet, and it's depressing. I tried an experiment the other day, turning off IPv4 and using only IPv6 on a desktop at home. HN, Ars Technica, Twitter, Facebook... none of them even have an AAAA record. Google does for

If you're willing to go up to 469PLN you could get a previous-generation (still basically pushing the limits of SATA2) Sandforce-powered 60GB SSD. http://allegro.pl/ocz-vertex-2-e-ssd-2-5-60gb-285-mb-s-275-m...

Some of the first-gen SATA SSDs (based on the JMicron 601 and 602 chipsets) had nasty stuttering problems with lots of concurrent writes, but pretty much every SSD made in the past 12 months is going to blow away any spinning-platter disk
