Why can't implementations tree-shake through require(x) where x can be determined statically and warn where x cannot?

In a discussion about where we draw the line on acceptable discrimination, this is an extremely lazy sentiment which adds nothing to the discussion. What if "how I want" is to exclude all people of a certain race from my business

On a shorter timescale, I also really like using mouthwash to prevent snacking. A well timed rinse leaves a nice minty flavor in my mouth and also somehow completely suppresses the urge to eat carbs.

It's not useful to judge prohibition in a single dimension of "work well" to "didn't work". Sure, cirrhosis rates went down significantly but organized crime (a disease of its own) was gifted a torrent of money

Uber is different because every place it has to operate is different. Maybe something weird happens in XYZ city that requires drivers to route around a certain street so they need a feature that generalizes that. or some such deal. Reddit O

We had to develop a form in MS access for some mock business use case. It was something that you _might_ have done 15 years ago? FFS though, just teach sqlite. It's infinitely more convenient to run sqlite than MS access (windows-only)

I don't think having absolute pitch makes you a better composer. OTOH, composing music as a child will likely lead to absolute pitch. My anecdote is that I gained absolute pitch by playing on a Yamaha keyboard as a young child. Seeing

Recent ASU grad here, in CS. It pains me to say this, but the standards are completely non-existent. Professors use lectures and assignments that have been recycled for the past decade and a half (maybe more). I had a database class where w

This makes zero sense. The backend and many components are AGPL or GPL licensed. You want ActivityPub, go implement it yourself. The main use case is hosting your own instance for your group of friends/etc, which seems pretty decentral

No. The cost of living IS going up. Corporations bought a huge chunk of the housing stock and have been fixing the prices and squeezing renters. Everything else you said is still true, though.

This is why I find this discussion so tiresome. Everyone in this thread takes it as an axiom that they have some oracle that takes a candidate as an input and spits out a number representing their suitability for the job which is then fudge

Yes that is a fair comparison. In the latter you have to write down or remember what you did to reproduce it, and even if you make a script it could screw up and leave your system in a bad state.

If it's something you want others to use, why not reuse audited libraries? For something for which security is important, no one wants to audit your homegrown HTTP parser/TOR implementation/etc.

I think it means "entering a state where the thread has nothing to do but wait." An "add" instruction is synchronous but I wouldn't say it "blocks".

So if this positive scalar factor adjusts different people's values, why can't it also adjust a single person's value from time-to-time, or mood-to-mood? I can find very few interesting conclusions to draw from this article.
