That's just wrong if you're "in the field". Have a look at Fuseki, or HDT, or Virtuoso (hell even Oracle supports RDF). The tools are very mature at this point so I had enough with people saying the Semantic Web never li

I beg to differ. Being a semantic web researcher myself, I can tell you that it has produced many relevant theories and artifacts that do help influence the world in positive ways. Here's a few to get you started: http://lin

Meh... Semantic Web is a field... it's like hating natural language processing or distributed systems for not having achieved much over the past 10 years. But the fact is they provide strong theoretical foundations for us to develop ki

It allows one to put a piece of information on the internet, and as long as the network lives, nobody can possibly remove that piece of information. It's stuck there forever. Not sure if that will be useful or not in the future, but th

Do you know about WebRTC and Webtorrent? You can do this even without a relay server. Just browser-to-browser.

Sometimes I think about how even the number 40 is totally arbitrary. If we made the norm 30, would things be that different? It's such a sad thought that ~half (if not more) of the time we are alive, we spend at work, mostly doing some

Exactly what I thought. WebRTC has this limitation and it's not actually possible to implement a DHT on top of it. Not sure why the developers decided to use WebRTC. I mean, it's a good transport layer for real-time communication

Only 2 days? It's 2015!! You'd think that we could afford doing what each and everyone of us loved the whole damn time and not just 2 days while slaving away the rest of the month.

I feel differently from most people in this thread. Academia is not industry, and is not really driven by a capitalist market. You can debate that philosophy, and many other theoretical fields, have very little value in the market, and perh

Not really. The blockchain is meant to work for transaction type of information, not documents. It also keeps all of the transactions ever made. This type of web would probably contain a lot more information than that. Therefore you wouldn&

From an ethical/moral point of view, a UBI makes total sense; if someone doesn't want to work, why should they be forced to? Problem is we still haven't seen a single country implement UBI. Why is that? Wouldn't people f

Wouldn't a UBI simply be inflationary? That is, rather than making 0 you make 1500 (say). But since everybody is making 1500, then it would be the same as making 0 again. So unless we have strict blocks on pricing things, UBI seems non
