There seems to be widespread misunderstanding between encryption in transit and encryption at rest. This tweet is focused on data at rest. The connection between your phone and Apple is encrypted.

It’s a perfectly valid point in general, but most of us aren’t up against state actors, who seem capable of getting into any target.

You could already do that. Facebook notoriously abused the process.

That really depends on the user. As a developer, I’ve modified quite a few system files and would like those things backed up. It’s one reason I don’t use Backblaze – they refuse to backup system files. As an employer, I can imagine a situa

My home iMac has a folder action set up to print anything I drop in it. That folder is in Dropbox. So I just put files in there from anywhere and it prints. Surprisingly, it’s really quick. It starts printing within 2-3 seconds. On my iPho

Your position is that HN users are anti-apple and lying about this issue, rather than people with no agenda just sharing their experiences?

But don’t you have some extensions that are not enabled for incognito mode? Perhaps they assume it works as long as the same extensions are installed in both modes?

Except Apple is making a direct attempt at solving the issue as it relates to CSAM (and easily expanded to other data) and facing a huge backlash. I wonder if there’s no solution because we’re (myself included) are just stubbornly unwilling

It’s so ingrained in the OS, that it’s hardly noticeable. Yet I have certainly switched to performing initial web searches in “spotlight” rather than opening Safari. On MacOS, (last I heard) they use Bing to deliver results you see in spotl

You are absolutely correct. I remember when I switched from Windows XP to Mac how much quieter it got. No more constant pop ups, and importantly, apps were not allowed to steal focus. Now there’s a constant stream of interruptions. I’m cons

Dude, writing out the background and history of everything must have taken quite some time, but I found it very valuable in helping to understand the present state of things. I just want to say thank you.

Bike bells work really well. It drives me nuts when bikes ride up on me and make zero effort to ring the bell right there on their handle. If they did this, I would be out of the way by the time they got to me. I have no problem jumping out

Synology is great if you want to stick to using their GUI, which is very capable. If you are more of a DIY/CLI person, I would avoid Synology and similar products. They have everything set up in a very particular way, and you can’t mes

So much this. Host locally, and push encrypted backups to a cloud service. Doing this will screw Google’s ability to optimize storage for identical files, which may drive up costs, but it’s the best way to ensure your data stays private.

I agree that the current photo scanning system won't work for other types of files. Further, I don't think they really even need to scan text files except to see if it's actually a filetype that should be scanned. And they ca

You seem to be contradicting yourself. You have the option to turn off iCloud photos in which your phone will not scan the photos because there is no point. > Why not scan your whole library? That may very well be the case in the future,

I fully admit to being a bit pedantic here, but you are not logged into iCloud on a device by default. Once logged in, then yes, iCloud photos is enabled, but that seems like a fair assumption if you are using iCloud services. > And real

The argument made in several comments that this will result in SWATing isn't cited because it's an opinion on potential future events. A counter opinion, therefore, also would not need citation.

I think it's critical to understand that a single law can shift that window drastically. If Apple can allow for a small shift in that direction – however distasteful – it may prevent the larger shift caused by anti-privacy legislation.

I really wish the people – especially those on HN – would take a broader look at what Apple is proposing and better understand the forces at play before being so critical of the tech. I understand the initial knee-jerk anti-privacy response

I think there's an unspoken assumption that photos are only the first part of this scanning exercise. IMO, Apple will likely end up scanning all content you choose to put on their servers. Tangentially, I think keeping their servers cl
