But I don't mean they would have to access customer data. If, for instance, they just took a look at how much they were billing certain clients for bandwidth over time, they could already use that as a reasonable growth metric. Do yo

But what I mean is you wouldn't even need to look at customer data. Just knowing how much traffic is going to which services would tell you a lot about a business. I don't know if they somehow obfuscate that as well.

This is something I wonder about Amazon/Google/Microsoft specifically: since they’re hosting basically every startup, how much are they able to leverage that data to their own benefit? AWS alone must have quite a detailed insight

Similar behavior is what turned me off of Swift. I still think it’s a nice language to write, but I tried to adopt it on Linux and the situation with tooling was so horrendous. Lots of things were under-supported or under-documented, and e

Would you say that everyone who falls victim to predatory lending is dumb? Or do people maybe get exploited when they are in bad economic situations as well? https://www.kqed.org/news/10499074/one-uber-drivers-sto

This is a concept I think about often in an engineering management context, and I think it applies not only to software, but to processes in general. I think there is often an impulse to systematize workflows, because it makes work quantifi
