"The principle of least surprise" is, in every use I've ever seen, just an obnoxious way to say that it's not how you would have done it.

A good deal of it is change lists (CLs), which are sort of like pull requests on github, and issue tracking. With inbox I have all CLs that mark me as a reviewer explicitly in one bundle, all the ones in my "domain" but not with m

Much of that is due to issues of numerical approximation, which isn't an issue for our actual planets. Though, unlike newtonian planets, our planets can precess slightly due to general relativity thingies.

Here's a screenshot of some side-by-side diff action: https://fr.atlassian.com/wac/software/fisheye/overview/scree... Basically, it let's you look at the old code, or look at the new code, or s

Right, that's the idea. Regarding static initializers, I use them for precompiling regexps and templates, but not much more than that.

Worked for maps :) The same exact argument applies. The code was broken to begin with, the implementation behavior did not break anything. And, just like with map iteration ordering, it's very difficult/impossible for the compiler

Took a brief look at the front page. - No side-by-side diffs? Didn't see any in screen shots. - The scopes asked for seem very broad. I may be confused, but it seemed like it was asking for write access to all repositories, public and

Well, they could do what they did with map iteration: make it happen arbitrarily different each program execution.

We're not talking about a relational database, we're talking about a mysql-wire-compatible database. Google BigQuery has been around for a while too. Adding "disclaimer: googler" to every post I make on HN seems pretty o

It does not change semantics. If it does in some case, that's a bug and please report it. Edit: I see, import order can affect the order that the init()s in different packages are invoked, presumably. I stand corrected. Edit 2: But tha

I certainly do. On cloud no less. The reality is that Amazon got to market several years before Google, so GCP had some catching up to do. That trend is changing, and this is one indication.

It doesn't matter. (disclaimer: googler) I see it as a hubris against the idea that Google claimed to not be evil, and the fact that evil is such a poorly defined concept, and whether or not Google meets the bar depends entirely on t

The non-engineers don't get the linux desktops. They get mac laptops (or at least 98% of them do, some finance/business folks need excel/windows) and some hardware to dock it at their desks.
