There's no logic to it. Some vendor or higher up convinced management that this was important, probably emphasizing data integrity or something. I doubt it was some super well researched decision.

Their own paper[0] shows it performing at similar levels to the A72, a four year old core. Those are obviously really impressive results for an open source core. The best ARM core is Apple’s Lightning, which has an IPC rate about 4X that of

Yeah, I just checked and it appears to be a CUDA project, so neither the Intel nor AMD GPUs help here. Still, that could have been clarified in the article.

I’m almost entirely sure Litwintschik is misinformed in regards to the GPUs in his laptop. Yes, he does have the Intel GPU he mentioned, but if he paid $200 to upgrade the GPU as he claims, he would also have a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 5500

Intel chips still support older versions of x86. Apple only supports ARMv8.

Gassée actually significantly understates the power consumption difference between the Intel chip in his MBP and an iPad Pro. MBP 13s sustain around 35 watts of power indefinitely. An 12X sustains only around 10 watts.

This review[0] has SPEC2006 scores for the A12X in the iPad Pro 2018. The same review estimates the per core power at around ~4W. This review[1] compares the SPEC2006 score of the A13 to high end modern desktop chips. The A13 is very close

Your iPad doesn't have a T2 in it. That's the name for the ARM coprocessor inside of newer Macs (2018+), which IIRC shares some similarities with the A10, including (probably) the media block. The 3700X contains its own encoding b

ARMv8 was a modern redesign. Macs aren't running anything close to the ARM ISA of the '80s.

It’s already 64 bit, but it’s still ARMv8. ARMv9 is just about to ship, and Apple will undoubtably want to transition to that as well.

Apple chips have one custom extension (AMX), but IIRC, they don't give third party developers access to this, so from a developer's perspective it's a standard ARMv8 chip.
