my interpretation was that they were just caching the last accessed key+value and checking query keys against that last accessed key in hopes to skip the hashing/indexing.

Not exactly a class, but there are runtimes of concrete programs written in SBCL and C++ here: https://benchmarksgame-team.pages.debian.net/benchmarksgame/... No direct Rust SBCL comparisons, but generally Rust and C++

absolutely. when I worked at bestbuy maybe 5 years ago, there were a lot of people who would have bought a Mac if there were a cheaper 15" option. For many people, especially some older folks, 15" is the minimum. On the other hand

AVX-512 has masks and a lot of new instructions. It's not just wider.

Recent GPUs have been RISC for some time now. Since AMD replaced their TeraScale architecture.

Are they actually awful at it? Or just worse than Google? Is there a smaller company doing all these things better than Apple?

AMD uses TSMC. Apple’s cores are still faster than AMD’s. Regardless, ARMv8 isn’t exactly RISC.

It took a while for OLED mobile displays to achieve the brightest we had with high end LCD mobile displays for years. There are still mobile LCDs just as bright as any OLED available (iPad Pro 12.9).

OLED displays are typically less efficient than a good LCD. Anyone who claims they are is perpetuating a myth likely rooted in the fact that OLED power scales with APL. They forget the high base cost of keeping the active matrix powered.

That’s not true—just a very persistent myth. Your intuition is correct. Anandtech display reviews have actual measurements if you’re interested. See this chart: https://images.anandtech.com/doci/9394/luminance-curv

More tangentially related, but the main character of Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Dispossessed” is modeled after Oppenheimer (who Le Guin’s parents were friends with).

With Haskell, you learn to discover in a different way. Just think about the shape of the function you’d want, then type that into Hoogle. I learned Rust before Haskell, but prefer Hoogle to Rust’s searching via dot chaining.

Masks make SIMD so much less annoying. Can't wait until every device that matters has SVE2 or AVX512. The ARM side is moving slower than I would have hoped unfortunately (Apple being the major holdout).

Are we sure this kind of GPU accelerated CSS is actually more efficient than WebGL? Besides, CSS is far more prone to being impacted by browser quirks.

From The Verge: > Its screens offer a respectable 1800 x 1920 pixels per eye with a maximum 90Hz refresh rate, plus new display tech that Meta says offers 75 percent more contrast than the Quest 2’s.
