Agreed, but "tuning" is an understatement. Capitalism worked well when most businesses were local and being a large, successful company meant employing a lot of people from the same communities as your customers. This proximity is

Please, be serious for a moment. It would have to be an amount of money to be worth the risk and therefore show up in quarterlies. Also there would have to be a buyer. And there would have to be a bunch of companies Apple shopped their data

Excluding conferences^ and events there's nothing special about the HN audience (other than affluence) that makes them particularly likely—relative to people in a hundred other industries—to need to travel to the USA. ^ ...which are mo

Like editorial cartoons have done for over a century, changing the context lets the viewer observe whether their surface beliefs are consistent with their intuitions and principles. I tend to find the degree of depth in South Park is entire

Maybe—and the UI could be little more than a script that does exactly what you described. The point of making it a UI is, first and foremost, to get people thinking about this question. And it gives people the option to acheive what you jus

Backup means that if it takes me 6 months to realise that the 2014 finances folder had been accidentally deleted, I can still recover it. I'd love to see BackBlaze offer the option to select "mission critical" folders that ha

Please, the debate skit was as bad as anything they've done. Cheap caricatures of the media's caricatures of the candidates. The only redeeming aspect of the skit were the cameo performances, particularly the portrayal of Harris—a

I want to love SNL but a lot of the current political skits are just cast members mimicking news events mostly verbatim while pulling funny faces. (E.g. The Kavenaugh hearings: “I like beer! I like beer!”) Or taking a serious matter and tur

Don't worry, endlessly escalating software complexity will keep us all busy. I love current MacOS but my perception it's never been quite as bug-free as it was in the Snow Leopard era. And I attribute that to increasing complexity

I don't know how Catalina works specifically, but if I was designing for this contingency I'd have it so that any software compiled locally by a user with sudo rights would be automatically notarized against a localhost certificat

Worry about the slippery slope when the slippery slope actually slips. For now there's good reasoning behind what Apple has done and I applaud their active concern for badware.

I for one welcome our notarizing overlords. Running a terminal command to disable it is a very minor inconvenience for us nerds... in return we'll get fewer tedious house calls from family and friends asking why their computer is doing

I can't speak to that particular method as I haven't personally played with Catalina, but you are correct. $ sudo spctl --master-disable definitely works.

The parent post is factually false. The $99/year developer account fee is not a prerequisite for notarizing macOS apps.

Thwarting denial of service attacks isn’t a bug. You seem to be confused about what your rights are around website availability. Hint: you have no rights. Absent specific coercion by government, the owner of the website had all the rights.

Apps aren't required to be notarized and it trivial for any vaguely competent person to dismiss the one-time warnings about unsigned apps. So it's only a big deal if you choose to make it one. To be perfectly honest, if you can&#x

I was being serious. I don’t have a problem with responsible gun ownership. Switzerland is a good model. The NRA loves to point at rates of Swiss gun ownership. If the USA implemented all of Switzerland’s gun laws I think you’d be okay.
