I wish I knew Scala, I was too caught up trying to decipher the code to take in the author's point. I have a basic knowledge of monads but unfortunately wasn't able to glean anything further from this article.

It took forever to boot. When I dropped mine and broke its disk I then swapped in a 6GB disk and it took even longer, around 2 minutes. I went back to an mp3 discman instead before getting a Mac mini in 2005, which opened my eyes to the f

And let's be honest, if you don't think you'll ever face such a borderline case you're being naïve or shortsighted. Just take the time to learn git. Like learning to use unix or $EDITOR you will not regret it. With whatever git-hg bridges

It may be accurate but you still have to question whether the comparisons were useful. We all know that you don't boot the machine to type a document, power it down, and then boot it again to work on your finance spreadsheet. Including boot

Could be, but a lot of people who wanted more than TM 1.5 provides have already gone to Emacs or vim.

It'd be a small annoyance but literally every Emacs user customizes Emacs and has a config file. The veterans would grumble and drag their feet to upgrade to the "broken" version, and then we'd simply bind C-[npfbae] and forget about the sw

I don't think you want an event loop per core, that's back into the realm of concurrent madness, and I don't think that's how Erlang works (Erlang folk: correct me if I'm wrong on that). It's not a bad thing that data has to be copied to be

Traditional shells provide some small conveniences that are hard to give up. You cannot shoehorn this stuff into an existing language by defining global functions, it must be syntax. Ruby could come close by not requiring parens, but still

And in a better spot. I'm not that thrilled about Reeder for Mac even though I love it on my iPhone and iPad, and a lot of it is due to the awkward position of the share button and such. The UI is really good looking but not usable enough.

I change the keyboard shortcut to focus the menu bar from Ctrl-F2 to Ctrl-2 so I can type it comfortably from the home row (Caps lock is mapped to Control). Once you can focus the menu bar everything is a few keystrokes away. I couldn't liv

I like having command and control. I get Emacs-like navigation in every text box without giving up Cmd-[aefbnpt] for other things like select all, new tab or window, find in page, etc. I don't use Spaces because it falls short of what I got

I have a feeling that some old bank software has fixed size fields and that's we get ridiculous maximum lengths on bank passwords.

Unfortunately some crappy site is going to thwart such an effort. "bzzz! you can only use 12 chars in your password" or "you have to use a symbol/uppercase letter" or some other lunacy. le sigh

Several years ago I took a train from London to Huddersfield (between Leeds and Manchester) and it was about £75. Then I flew from Manchester to Amsterdam and it cost around £50. I don't understand it either.

People seem to substitute it for "automatically" as they please, and I find it annoying as well. But I'm in the seemingly tiny minority that cringe when they see "begs the question" misused, "should of", etc. Most people don't seem to care

Guys, let's not get hung up on how many days you get with light use and that you already get more than a day. InclinedPlane's point stands whether you get 1/2 a day or 4 days out of your battery with light-ish usage. Hell, I can get 2-3 day

They definitely need a list. I'm generalizing a quick'n'dirty watcher[1] I made for jsconf.us 2011 to check a list of URLs, which is fun in a geeky way, but it's also lame I have to resort to that. [1] https://gist.github.com/726642
