Sorry for replying to myself. I want to mention that not everyone needs the Sistine Chapel, that is there's a lot of room for all skill levels. The guy closer to the other end of the spectrum who knows just enough PHP to hack something toge

Programming is a creative endeavour. All these accomplished and renowned 9-5 programmers must hang out at the end of the rainbow with all the accomplished 9-5 painters, musicians, etc. I'm not saying there aren't any - some people really ju

This is the first time I've seen it done but I haven't read a lot of assembly code or anything. > but it never occurred to me that it would be useful for assembly language too. (And in fact I'm not sure that it is :) Why not?

Probably not, that's certainly a fair point. But in that case why go into it at all? Just say it's magic "faster" juice (and don't post it to HN). One thing I'm curious about as a developer is how this is different than the type inference t

I didn't use Spaces before Lion. It's still not perfect but I like it better now with Mission Control. The full screen behaviour is annoying. What if I want to go full screen on a secondary display? Huge oversight and who knows when they'll

For many people, including hosting admins, MySQL was the path of least resistance. MySQL required less maintenance than Postgres back in the day. It's pretty much exactly the same situation as with PHP. The tool created by mere mortals is u

Yes cumbersome would have been a better word than difficult. Once open it's pretty straightforward to navigate, though I really wish you could type the name of any menu item and jump to it like you can on OS X. If there's no alt shortcut on

When I use Windows I feel like everything is inside a damn context menu that's difficult to access with the keyboard. (imo of course) OS X beats Linux for keyboard shortcuts because they are more consistent. My ranking is: 1. OS X, 2. Linux

An article from 2003 - that doesn't mention Readability, Flattr, and other new takes on micropayments - is your final word on why micropayments are doomed to fail? Sometimes it's useful to revisit an idea and look at it with an open mind. T

I'm interested in Ext JS / Sencha and YUI but haven't tried them yet. Briefly tried Dojo, it looks like a very solid framework that is really powerful if you spend a bit of time to learn how it works and fits together.

Many great ideas are obvious in hindsight. If it was so obvious why had nobody done it? Would you say, "Oh Amazon? Whatever they're not doing anything new. They're just selling shit except their store is on the web. Big deal, that's not inn
