Lack of tessellation was a big one. In many cases you'd rather have the polygons pre-tessellated in the file format. Now you can. Or you can avoid doing that and save the bytes. The format is also designed to slide onto the GPU more

It should be backed up, for sure. Like how is this modern? In this case it's the column format for attributes and the newer encodings. Things the industry wasn't doing a decade ago.

You can always convert after the fact. Just go from MVT to MLT. There's a Java based program in the repo.
