The Microsoft services are becoming a very tempting alternative to Google Apps. Mostly I'm getting sick of Google randomly dropping services I use and re-designing every 3 months. I was looking at fastmail.fm for my mail hosting, but n

I've used a few Parsec-based parser combinators and now I'd never go back to a parser generator. It might be a little slower at runtime, but the ability to see everything in your chosen language is worth it in my opinion.

It's possible, but I'd expect modern decoders to be more resilient to out of spec files. I'd share them, but copyright and all that.

They've been across about 4 different disks. I copy using SCP, so it's unlikely that the corruption happened over the network, most likely it was between the CPU and disk as it was being read/written.

That's actually pretty nifty, and shows what a little bit of corruption does to an image. Hopefully more systems will start shipping with checksumming file systems by default. Even better if they have error correction. I still have som

This is something I've been through before. The first version of an app I worked from was very SQL heavy. Almost every calculation was done in a stored proc and the app servers just formatted that. As the product got popular this becam

I've had the fun experience of debating with anti-vaccine people. Outside of the religious 'god will protect us' line, which I can't really argue with as it's a matter of faith, the vaccines cause autism line keeps

There are true common-rail direct cylinder injection gasoline engines out there. They're not so common though, since there aren't as many advantages to it compared to a diesel engine. Cars marketed as GDI, such as the Ford EcoBoos

Never underestimate the pedantry of a crowd of IT-types. I used to be like that, but I grew out of it. The main problem seems to be that it's either a simplification - which is needed because the real thing is too complex to absorb at

I just took a close look at it, and I think you're right. It's not the easiest thing to see due to the wireframe, but with a second look it does appear that the injectors are just behind the valve. So yes, it's multi-point in

It's worth noting that the engine illustrated is a gasoline direct injection engine, which are fairly common on new cars but historically not so. Until the early 2000s most fuel injected gasoline engines were multi-point injection - th

Looks good, but the typesetting is a little off and I don't see any examples of paragraphs or line wrapping. I built a PDF library for PHP many years ago and the hardest part was text, typesetting is a hard problem. Looks good for expo

I'd be cautious about deploying a high traffic app to Mono as well. This is more for experiments and personal apps.

You can get quite a bit done on Mono these days. My main job is at a MS/.NET shop, so for my personal projects I'm mostly using MVC 3 and PostgreSQL deploying to Mono. Probably not good for large installations who want vendor supp

I haven't tried MVC4 yet, I was waiting for async support in Mono. Personally I run everything on a VPS, because I'm not worried about scale. If I was running something larger I'd probably go with Azure.
