The problem with that is these people planned for what was promised to them. As a younger person in a skilled occupation, like most HNers I expect, I have no expectation on the state to provide for me and consequently have my own provisions

To add to that, Markdown was created to scratch one person's itch with no real desire to support a wider community. It was put online and other people liked it and modified it, but the original site doesn't have any of this.

But there isn't a standardised version of Markdown. There's John Gruber's original syntax, and there are dozens if not hundreds of variants. When some enterprising people declared they had created "Standard Markdown"

I used to run my own mailserver. It was alright, but occasionally I'd screw up the config and not notice for days, or my auto-update of spamassassin would fail and I'd get heaps of spam. I moved to Google Apps when it was in beta,

That's actually a solved problem! As the article mentioned, it works the other way around - the browser specifies what it can receive. Since this wasn't around from day 1 it's really opt-in. Sure, sometimes Google make a SNAF

Fortunately Postgres is getting a lot more replication love. You can already do a lot with the warm-standby and FDWs to do basic sharding, and they're rolling in a lot more to 9.4 and 9.5. EnterpriseDB are the place to look for that to

While I'm unsure of what a http query api would look like it would be hugely useful. Every language has some sort of http and xml or Json library, and so do many monitoring tools. I probably wouldn't use it for an application, but

Immutability is an excellent tool to manage mutability. It lets you make guarantees about what won't change, which allows for some really great optimisations - like safe cross-thread reads without locks. I agree it's not right for

ARC may be slower than a good GC, but what it has is deterministic behaviour. A 10ms pause could be tolerable if you know when it will happen. A fair few years ago I worked in the murky world of J2ME games, and a common pattern was byte[] _

With the new sgen GC it's viable. The old Bohem-based GC was pretty terrible with F# as it allocates a huge number of transient objects. As for tools, beyond frameworks Xamarin Studio has a good-enough F# environment. There's also
