The same way you can explain electromagnetism as a field throughout space-time, and then pretend that it's a force transmitted by photons. Feynman once famously claimed that no one really understood quantum mechanics, if that makes you feel

I'll take you at your word regarding your examples of "thrills", although I would note that the horse is probably less impressed :-) I'm not sure about your last point. Enormous strides have been made in designing road networks that are far

Having fun whilst driving is not actually incompatible with road safety, and I'm not entirely sure why you seem to be suggesting that it is. The cause of this horrible accident certainly wasn't an excess of (driving) enjoyment.

People drive for reasons other than commuting, of course. I happen to like driving (especially since I learned to drive a manual). I'm sorry if you don't. Your last point is certainly true. I used to commute to work via a combination of bik

That's true. You'll forgive me if I drive as though it wasn't ;-)

That's certainly a fair point. But you try explaining that to a person who lost a spouse or a child in a car crash resulting from a "glitch". Humans, for better or worse, like to have a sense of control over their own circumstances, even

Right, that was the part I did understand :-) What I didn't get was why the parent comment was disappointed that Google didn't choose SCTP over SPDY, since no either-or choice is required here. Couldn't SPDY be run over SCTP as well (leavin

I'm afraid I don't understand this. SCTP is a transaction-level protocol, whilst SPDY works at the application layer, does it not? These choices are orthogonal, not mutually-exclusive, as near as I can tell.

Technically, I think that's a dogma, not a mantra. In a way, of course, one of the greatest triumphs of modern civilisation is that we now have so many folks who can afford to be picky about where their vegetables come from. I think that's

Yep, that's certainly true. One nice thing about tags, though, is that they can span an entire project (whatever files you specified for inclusion in the tags file). So you can move the cursor over a function invocation, hit "ctrl-]", and j

Typically, you would use something like Exuberant Ctags to generate a taglist file, which you then tell vim about using "set tags" (this process can, of course, be automated using an autocmd). Have a look through ":help tags" for all the am

One potential problem with the scenario outlined here by Krugman is the assumption that an economy organised principally around information will precipitate the devaluing of that knowledge. What's true for oil and steel is not necessarily t

I think we can forgive a sixteen-year-old kid for confusing "Hindi" and "Hindu". By the way, self-esteem is not a conserved quantity. There's no need to tear an obviously talented person down to make yourself feel better.

Sure, but it has the potential to speed up backups and streaming media (between your hard disk and television) over wireless by quite a bit. Folks running dedicated media center PCs have a bit more flexibility now.

Never, to judge from the introductory copy on the TextMate web site. Which I think is a pity, since the editor has some real strengths (although nothing that isn't more or less already available in Vim or Emacs, near as I can tell, if sligh
