Select * is the problem, not the blobs. Storing blobs should be more efficient that putting them in a filesystem somewhere else (which is effectively just another database) and dealing with the overhead of a bunch of other filesystem operat

I think you missed one of the big advantage/disadvantages, non-replaceable components let the manufacturer add their own premiums on higher memory/storage variants.
