Someone used this pattern to make a very simple 'bot' with autohotkey, it is used here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aiXCnpXBfc That game is event based, not frame based, so it is possible to put down multiple pieces in one frame. Here

Great book, always a good introduction to an HTML5 feature I need to use for the first time.

The vertical align is off in his screenshot, but in Firefox it seems to be spot on. Also I wouldn't worry too much about the colors, that's about the easiest thing to change yourself.

Nothing is stopping you from using this as a framework and adding your own styles over the 'flatness'. If anything this is a much nicer base to work off of than if you started with something that had poorly made gradients.

I agree. There's absolutely no reason to have photoshop in the browser. If you want to sync your files with 'the cloud' you don't need a browser for that.

JavaScript was my first language. I learned allthe basics of programming in it. I quickly got frustrated because I still did not know how to make anything complex. I switched to python and it almost was like easymode. With python I was much

So you're saying that we should either be willing to pay $5/m for an RSS reader service, or $5/m to host the service ourselves? Someone with a lot of feeds wouldn't be able to fit all of them in the 5 MB that DOM Storage allows. I wouldn't

I just tried this, and it doesn't work as expected. With a stroke it might, but with fill, it leaks.

That's really cool! Can't stare at it for too long though, the colors are too bold for me. I like the amount of presets you have, I'm new to this game, it's very cool to see all these things. I have a few ideas that I want to try and implem

Hi fellow Simon, I do link to the code on github, for anyone that wants to look at it in full. Here it is again: https://gist.github.com/3889013 That's a great tip! I love little optimizations like that, thanks for the input. :)

As per some feedback, I've added a random button, and some initial life, for those that don't know what to create. I'm still working on some of the other things people have suggested: - Saving the state of the 'creation stage' and

Yes, I'm working on an update that adds something interesting from the start, and a better explanation of how to play. Thanks for the feedback. :)

I think I'll add a 'Create Life' button that adds a random known pattern.

I tried making this initially but had trouble. I will try to revisit it soon though.

I'm on the same version, I haven't tested on Linux. Could the problem be that you aren't creating the initial cells? Try drawing this pattern in the center before clicking start: |0|0|0| |0|_|0| |0|_|0| or |_|0|_|

Sounds like it could be fun, I'll try it out and push the change if it works well. Ultimately I would like to add a way to have an 'infinite' field, but this might be easier to implement. Thanks for the feedback.

It could essentially be used as a very cheap vps. Maybe for running a bnc, personal website, etc.
