Yes, nice one. My favorite kidsafe curse is from an old BBC radio show from the late 40's and early 50's, called The Goon Show. The main character would say "curses and naughty words". The BBC at that time was super-strict and you couldn't

True, but I despair of it ever actually happening. If even companies with sales people can get it wrong, where getting it wrong makes a difference, then what hope to companies who stick employees in little fabric colored boxes have? Of cour

It's one of the ways that I am available to my congregation. And they love the chat feature as they can catch me without having to call. Haven't taken on anyone outside of the congregation yet. I suppose that could happen.

I have previously made my kids use Khan Academy. I did try it once myself, and zipped through some of the early stuff. I really should go back and continue, especially after I just tried helping my oldest daughter with her math homework and

An interesting point, but a pretty thin blog entry. I think that everything I have done has benefited from practice. Even programming. The Pragmatic Programmers (iirc) even devised code katas to formalize the practice process.

No. That said, they do seem to be either making mistakes or getting their eye off the target. The publicly admitted target is to provide social networking for people. The obvious business target is to make money. But they have to make money

I love this classic advice. And now that I have to wear bi-focals, I need this advice.

I use a first generation Nook from Barnes and Noble. I have only 3rd party books on it purchased from publishers that make ebooks available without DRM. (O'Reilly, Manning, Pragmatic Programmers, Sitepoint) These are all backed-up up on my

I see where you are coming from, but some long-form writing is itself the research. Paul Graham (IIRC) said that his essays were a way of exploring ideas. In some of my writing, I have this to be the case also. And then, of course, there ar

Yes, a browser version, even without the drawing stuff, would be great. A walled garden that I can let my kids use while they get used to that big old outside world. Not trying to over-protect, but expose gently.

I'm English, so I understand irony just fine. There are still ways to write interesting headlines without going Howard Stern on us.

Ok, interesting enough article, but could we cut back just a tad on the attention seeking headlines?

Upvoted. It's worse than just females in tech, it's OMG men and women are different! Eeek! I kinda like the difference myself. Not because I don't want women in tech, but because women should be able to pursue whatever they want that makes

I love this idea. I have some pre-teens that I would love to allow to send more email while having control over who they can reach. Any plans for other than iPad?

Whenever I see statements of this form, I find myself adding "except when it doesn't" to the end and then finding it much more acceptable. Future software will look like Facebook except when it doesn't. Much better.

Clever. Or at least it made me laugh. I always wanted to make a "real" resume. The resume that you'd send if you were completely honest about the work that you've done, and the reasons for switching jobs. An un-resume. Or even just an annot

We get around that by opening the dishwasher a few inches as soon as it's finished its cycle. That way the steam escapes, and the heat in the unit finishes drying the dishes. Most of the water you see on the contents is steam that has re-co

Yes. The bean counters are finally in charge and the only thing that will cause a change will be the market's reaction in the shape of buying or not buying products. Doing what is awesome is out and careful is in. Sad.

Yup, that was my initial thought too. I have two daughters and I have gotten my eldest going with Ubuntu on her school laptop and she's loving it. I'm introducing her to shell scripting and LaTeX (through the awesome Pandoc tool) right now.

I suspect that you won't miss the snow. And certainly not the city's inability to plow anything other than the main roads after a heavy snowstorm. And I dare you to tell me that you miss the beltline traffic! :-)
